The reliability cost of default timeouts

Many widely used libraries and systems default to infinite or extremely large timeouts. In Java, common HTTP clients treat a timeout of zero as “wait indefinitely” unless explicitly configured. In Python, requests will wait indefinitely unless a timeout is set explicitly. The Fetch API does not define a built-in timeout at all. These defaults aren’t careless. They’re intentionally generic. Libraries optimize for the correctness of a single request because they can’t know what “too slow” means for your system. Survivability under partial failure is left to the application. ... Long timeouts can also mask deeper design problems. If a request regularly times out because it returns thousands of items, the issue isn’t the timeout itself. It’s missing pagination or poor request shaping. By optimizing for individual request success, teams unintentionally trade away system-level resilience. ... A timeout defines where a failure is allowed to stop. Without timeouts, a single slow dependency can quietly consume threads, connections and memory across the system. With well-chosen timeouts, slowness stays contained instead of spreading into a system-wide failure. ... A timeout is a decision about value. Past a certain point, waiting longer does not improve user experience. It increases the amount of wasted work a system performs after the user has already left. A timeout is also a decision about containment. Without bounded waits, partial failures turn into system-wide failures through resource exhaustion: blocked threads, saturated pools, growing queues and cascading latency.

For years, the standard for vertical software has been the nightly sync. You collect data all day, run a massive batch job at 2:00 AM, and provide your customers with a clean report the next morning. In a world of 2026, that delay is becoming a liability rather than a best practice. ... Fulkerson went on to say that runtime execution is another issue, and legacy tools for enforcing policies and privacy are static and don’t get enforced at runtime. When you’re dealing with non-deterministic systems, there needs to be a way to verifiably enforce policies at runtime execution because the blast radius of runtime data access has outgrown the protection mechanisms organizations have. He believes that confidential AI is the solution to these problems. Confidential AI builds on the properties of confidential computing, which involves using hardware that has an encrypted cache, allowing data and inference to be run inside an encrypted environment. While this helps prove that data is encrypted and nobody can see it, it doesn’t help with the governance challenge, which is where Fulkerson says confidential AI comes in. Confidential AI treats everything as a resource with its own set of policies that are cryptographically encoded. For example, you could limit an agent to only be able to talk to a specific agent, or only allow it to communicate with resources on a particular subnet.

The abuse of these systems is a special case of ‘living off the land’ attacks. The attacker attempts to abuse valid existing software to perform malicious actions. This abuse is often difficult to detect.” ... Huntress analyst Pham said to defend against attacks combining Net Monitor for Employees Professional and SimpleHelp, infosec pros should inventory all applications so unapproved installations can be detected. Legitimate apps should be protected with robust identity and access management solutions, including multi-factor authentication. Net Monitor for Employees should only be installed on endpoints that don’t have full access privileges to sensitive data or critical servers, she added, because it has the ability to run commands and control systems. She also noted that Huntress sees a lot of rogue remote management tools on its customers’ IT networks, many of which have been installed by unwitting employees clicking on phishing emails. Those 'Summarize With AI' Buttons May Be Lying to You

Put simply, when a user visits a rigged website and clicks a "Summarize With AI" button on a blog post, they may unknowingly trigger a hidden instruction embedded in the link. That instruction automatically inserts a specially crafted request into the AI tool before the user even types anything. ... The threat is not merely theoretical. According to Microsoft, over a 60-day period, it observed 50 unique instances of prompt-based AI memory poisoning attempts for promotional purposes. ... AI recommendation poisoning is a sort of drive-by technique with one-click interaction, he notes. "The button will take the user — after the click — to the AI domain relevant and specific for one of the AI assistants targeted," Ganacharya says. To broaden the scope, an attacker could simply generate multiple buttons that prompt users to "summarize" something using the AI agent of their choice, he adds. ... Microsoft had some advice for threat hunting teams. Organizations can detect if they have been affected by hunting for links pointing to AI assistant domains and containing prompts with certain keywords like "remember," "trusted source," "in future conversations," and "authoritative source." Consider the lifecycle of a typical microservice. In its journey from a developer’s laptop to production, it might generate a dozen distinct identities: a GitHub token for the repository, a CI/CD service account for the build, a registry credential to push the container, and multiple runtime roles to access databases, queues and logging services. The problem is not just volume; it is invisibility. When a developer leaves, HR triggers an offboarding process. Their email is cut, their badge stops working. India's E-Rupee Leads the Secure Adoption of CBDCs

E-transactions will be secured by hashing, digital signing and [advanced] encryption standards such as AES-192. This can ensure that the transaction data is not tampered with or altered. ... HSMs use advanced encryption techniques to secure transactions and keys. The HSM hardware [boxes] act as cryptographic co-processors and accelerate the encryption and decryption processes to minimize latency in financial transactions.

The Cloud Capital survey shows midsize IT vendor CFOs and their CIO partners struggling to contain cloud spending, with significant cost volatility from month to month. Three-quarters of IT org CFOs report cloud spending forecasts varying between 5% and 10% of company revenues each month, Pingry notes. Costs of AI workloads are harder to predict than traditional SaaS infrastructure, Pingry adds, and organizations running major AI workloads are more likely to report margin declines tied to cloud spending than those with moderate AI exposure. “Training spikes, usage-driven inference, and experimentation noise introduce non-linear patterns that break the forecasting assumptions finance relies on,” says a report from Cloud Capital. “The challenge will intensify as AI’s share of cloud spend continues scaling.” ... Phishing attempts are growing in volume partly because organized crime groups no longer need technical knowledge to launch ransomware or other forms of cyber extortion: they can simply buy in the services they need. This ongoing trend is combined with emerging social engineering techniques, including multi-channel attacks, deep fakes and ClickFix exploits. Cybercriminals are also using AI to fine tune their operations, with more persuasive personalization, better translation into other languages and easier reconnaissance against high-value targets. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework, released in 2023, explicitly calls for AI-BOMs as part of its “Map” function, acknowledging that traditional software SBOMs don’t capture model-specific risks. But software dependencies resolve at build time and stay fixed. Conversely, model dependencies resolve at runtime, often fetching weights from HTTP endpoints during initialization, and mutate continuously through retraining, drift correction, and feedback loops. That’s invaluable to know for incident response, while being practically useless for prevention. Budgeting for protecting AI-BOMs needs to take that factor into account. The ML-BOM tooling ecosystem is maturing fast, but it's not where software SBOMs are yet. Tools like Syft and Trivy generate complete software inventories in minutes. ML-BOM tooling is earlier in that curve. Vendors are shipping solutions, but integration and automation still require additional steps and more effort. Organizations starting now may need manual processes to fill gaps. AI-BOMs won't stop model poisoning as that happens during training, often before an organization ever downloads the model.
