The excessive "tool sprawl" has been cited as a primary factor: 63% of organisations surveyed reported using more than five cloud runtime security tools, yet only 13% were able to successfully correlate alerts across these systems. ... Who needs real things when everything can be a hologram?

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said recently on Theo Von’s “This Past Weekend” podcast that everything is shifting to holograms. A hologram is a three-dimensional image that represents an object in a way that allows it to be viewed from different angles, creating the illusion of depth. Zuckerberg predicts that most of our physical objects will become obsolete and replaced by holographic versions seen through augmented reality (AR) glasses. The conversation floated the idea that books, board games, ping-pong tables, and even smartphones could all be virtualized, replacing the physical, real-world versions. Zuckerberg also expects that somewhere between one and two billion people could replace their smartphones with AR glasses within four years. One potential problem with that prediction: the public has to want to replace physical objects with holographic versions. So far, Apple’s experience with Apple Vision Pro does not imply that the public is clamoring for holographic replacements. ... I have no doubt that holograms will increasingly become ubiquitous in our lives. But I doubt that a majority will ever prefer a holographic virtual book over a physical book or even a physical e-book reader. The same goes for other objects in our lives. I also suspect both Zuckerberg’s motives and his predictive powers.


How AI Is Rewriting the CIO’s Workforce Strategy

With the mystique fading, enterprises are replacing large prompt-engineering teams with AI platform engineers, MLOps architects, and cross-trained analysts. A prompt engineer in 2023 often becomes a context architect by 2025; data scientists evolve into AI integrators; business-intelligence analysts transition into AI interaction designers; and DevOps engineers step up as MLOps platform leads. Biometric privacy on trial: The constitutional stakes in United States v. Brown

The divergence between the two federal circuit courts has created a classic “circuit split,” a situation that almost inevitably calls for resolution by the U.S. Supreme Court. Legal scholars point out that this split could not be more consequential, as it directly affects how courts across the country treat compelled access to devices that contain vast troves of personal, private, and potentially incriminating information. What’s at stake in the Brown decision goes far beyond criminal law. In the digital age, smartphones are extensions of the self, containing everything from personal messages and photos to financial records, location data, and even health information. Unlocking one’s device may reveal more than a house search could have in the 18th century, and the very kind of search the Bill of Rights was designed to restrict. If the D.C. Circuit’s reasoning prevails, biometric security methods like Apple’s Face ID, Samsung’s iris scans, and various fingerprint unlock systems could receive constitutional protection when used to lock private data. That, in turn, could significantly limit law enforcement’s ability to compel access to devices without a warrant or consent. Moreover, such a ruling would align biometric authentication with established protections for passcodes.

Securing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications is another important area, according to Gartner. SaaS security posture management (SSPM) and deep API integrations provide real-time visibility into SaaS app usage, configurations, and user behaviors, which Gartner says can help security teams remediate risks before they become incidents. Gartner defines SSPM as a category of tools that continuously assess and manage the security posture of SaaS apps. ... Other necessary capabilities for a complete SSE solution include digital experience monitoring (DEM) and AI-driven automation and coaching, according to Gartner.

A weak or shared passwords, outdated software, and misconfigured networks are consistently leveraged by malicious actors. You Can Build Authentication In-House, But Should You?

Auth isn’t a static feature. It evolves — layer by layer — as your product grows, your user base diversifies, and enterprise customers introduce new requirements. Over time, the simple system you started with is forced to stretch well beyond its original architecture. The problem is the limited time allocated to CISOs in audit committee meetings is not sufficient for comprehensive cybersecurity discussions. Increasingly, more time is needed for conversations around managing the complex risk landscape. In previous CISO roles, Gerchow had a similar cadence, with quarterly time with the security committee and quarterly time with the board. He also had closed door sessions with only board members. “Anyone who’s an employee of the company, even the CEO, has to drop off the call or leave the room, so it’s just you with the board or the director of the board,” he tells CSO. He found these particularly important for enabling frank conversations, which might centre on budget, roadblocks to new security implementations or whether he and his team are getting enough time to implement security programs. “They may ask: ‘How are things really going? Are you getting the support you need?’ It’s a transparent conversation without the other executives of the company being present.” ... Mind the Gap: AI-Driven Data and Analytics Disruption

The Holy Grail of metadata collection is extracting meaning from program code: data structures and entities, data elements, functionality, and lineage. For me, this is one of the most potentially interesting and impactful applications of AI to information management. I’ve tried it, and it works. I loaded an old C program that had no comments but reasonably descriptive variable names into ChatGPT, and it figured out what the program was doing, the purpose of each function, and gave a description for each variable. Eventually this capability will be used like other code analysis tools currently used by development teams as part of the CI/CD pipeline. Run one set of tools to look for code defects. Run another to extract and curate metadata. Someone will still have to review the results, but this gets us a long way there. ... Large language models can be applied in analytics a couple different ways. The first is to generate the answer solely from the LLM. Start by ingesting your corporate information into the LLM as context. Then, ask it a question directly and it will generate an answer. Hopefully the correct answer. But would you trust the answer? Associative memories are not the most reliable for database-style lookups. Imagine ingesting all of the company’s transactions then asking for the total net revenue for a particular customer. Why would you do that? Just use a database.

Your Recovery Timeline Is a Lie: Why They Fall Apart

Teams assume they can pull snapshots from S3 or recover databases from a backup tool. What they don’t account for is the reconfiguration time required to stitch everything back together. ... RTOs need to be redefined through the lens of operational reality and validated through regular, full-system DR rehearsals. This is where IaC and automation come in. By codifying all layers of your infrastructure — not just compute and storage, but IAM, networking, observability and external dependencies, too — you gain the ability to version, test and rehearse your recovery plans. Tools like Terraform, Helm, OpenTofu and Crossplane allow you to build immutable blueprints of your infrastructure, which can be automatically redeployed in disaster scenarios. But codification alone isn’t enough. Continuous testing is critical. Just as CI/CD pipelines validate application changes, DR validation pipelines should simulate failover scenarios, verify dependency restoration and track real mean time to recovery (MTTR) metrics over time. ... It’s also time to stop relying on aspirational RTOs and instead measure actual MTTR. It’s what matters when things go wrong, indicating how long it really takes to go from incident to resolution. Unlike RTOs, which are often set arbitrarily, MTTR is a tangible, trackable indicator of resilience.

Using photonics is seen as a potential way to alleviate this. By transmitting information using photons, vendors say they can make big efficiency and performance gains. The use of photonics in data centers is not new - DCD profiled Google’s Mission Apollo, which saw optical switches introduced to the search giant’s data centers, in 2023 - but interest in the technology has ramped up in recent months, with several vendors raising funds to develop their own particular flavors of photonics. ... All fake KeePass installation packages were signed with a valid digital signature, so they didn’t trigger any alarming warnings in Windows. The five newly discovered distributions had certificates issued by four different software companies. The legitimate KeePass is signed with a different certificate, but few people bother to check what the Publisher line says in Windows warnings. ... Distributors of password-stealing malware indiscriminately target any unsuspecting user. The criminals analyze any passwords, financial data, or other valuable information they manage to steal, sort it into categories, and sell whatever is needed to other cybercriminals for their underground operations. Ransomware operators will buy credentials for corporate networks, scammers will purchase personal data and bank card numbers, and spammers will acquire login details for social media or gaming accounts. That’s why the business model for stealer distributors is to grab anything they can get their hands on and use all kinds of lures to spread their malware. Trojans can be hidden inside any type of software — from games and password managers to specialized applications for accountants or architects.


Do you trust AI? Here’s why half of users don’t

Jason Hardy, CTO at Hitachi Vantara, called the trust gap “The AI Paradox.” As AI grows more advanced, its reliability can drop. He warned that without quality training data and strong safeguards, such as protocols for verifying outputs, AI systems risk producing inaccurate results. “A key part of understanding the increasing prevalence of AI hallucinations lies in being able to trace the system’s behavior back to the original training data, making data quality and context paramount to avoid a ‘hallucination domino’ effect,” Hardy said in an email reply to Computerworld. AI models often struggle with multi-step, technical problems, where small errors can snowball into major inaccuracies — a growing issue in newer systems, according to Hardy. With original training data running low, models now rely on new, often lower-quality sources. Treating all data as equally valuable worsens the problem, making it harder to trace and fix AI hallucinations. As global AI development accelerates, inconsistent data quality standards pose a major challenge. While some systems prioritize cost, others recognize that strong quality control is key to reducing errors and hallucinations long-term, he said.

First of all, it was never conceived as a true C-level role. It probably originated in the minds of some organisation consultants, but it never developed any true C-level weight. Even if it may hurt some, it is my opinion that it was very rarely given to people with true C-level potential. Second, it was almost always given to technologists by trade or background, although the underlying matter is unequivocally cross-functional and has always been: You cannot be successful around identity and access management for example without the involvement of HR and business units, and the ability to reach credibly towards them. ... It has aggregated a mixed set of responsibilities and accountabilities without building up the right organisational and managerial momentum, and many CISOs are simply being set up to fail: The role has simply become too complex to carry for the profile of the people it attracts. Scattered Spider: Understanding Help Desk Scams and How to Defend Your Organization

The goal of a help desk scam is to get the help desk operator to reset the credentials and/or MFA used to access an account so the attacker can take control of it. They'll use a variety of backstories and tactics to get that done, but most of the time it's as simple as saying "I've got a new phone, can you remove my existing MFA and allow me to enroll a new one?" From there, the attacker is then sent an MFA reset link via email or SMS. Usually, this would be sent to, for example, a number on file — but at this point, the attacker has already established trust and bypassed the help desk process to a degree. So asking "Can you send it to this email address" or "I've actually got a new number too, can you send it to…" gets this sent directly to the attacker. ... But, help desks are a target for a reason. They're "helpful" by nature. This is usually reflected in how they're operated and performance measured — delays won't help you to hit those SLAs! Ultimately, a process only works if employees are willing to adhere to it — and can't be socially engineered to break it. Help desks that are removed from day-to-day operations are also inherently susceptible to attacks where employees are impersonated. But, the attacks we're experiencing at the moment should give security stakeholders plenty of ammunition as to why help desk reforms are vital to securing the business.

We recognise that some cybercrime groups have connections to the Russian State, but assess that these type of deep-rooted relationships are likely to be the exception as opposed to the norm. When targeting the cybercrime threat, we have been focused on associating cost and risk to the threat actors who seek to cause harm to us and our allies, and we achieve this in a number of different ways. The NCA-led disruption of LockBit in 2024 was successful in undermining trust between members of the group, as well as any trust that victims might have had in LockBit keeping their word. 


Future-Proofing AI: Repeating Mistakes or Learning From the Past?

Are the enterprises rushing to deploy new open source AI projects taking the necessary security measures to isolate them from the rest of their infrastructure? Or are they disregarding recent open source security history and trusting them by default? Eight ways storage IT pros can evolve in the age of analytics and AI

Large organizations are spending millions of dollars annually on data storage, backups, and disaster recovery. On balance, there’s nothing wrong with that since data is the center of everything today – but all data should not be treated the same. Using cost modeling tools, the storage manager can enter actual storage costs to determine upfront new projected storage costs and actual usable capacity, based on data growth rates. These costs must factor in backups and disaster recovery, which can be 3X of storage spending, and should compare on-premises versus cloud models. An unstructured data management system that indexes all data across all storage can supply metrics on data volumes, costs, and predicted costs, and then model plans for moving less-active data to lower-cost archival storage, such as in the cloud. ... Storage teams must mitigate ransomware risks associated with file data. One way to do this is by implementing hybrid tiering strategies that offload infrequently accessed (cold) files to immutable cloud storage, which reduces the active attack surface by as much as 70 or 80 percent. Immutable storage ensures that once data is written, it cannot be altered or deleted, providing a robust defense against ransomware attempts to encrypt or corrupt files.

Doing nothing is still doing something

Here's the uncomfortable truth, doing nothing is still doing something – and very often, it's the wrong thing. We saw this play out at the start of the year when Donald Trump's likely return to the White House and the prospect of fresh tariffs sent ripples through global markets. Investors froze, and while the tariffs have been shelved (for now), the real damage had already been done – not to portfolios, but to behaviour. This is decision paralysis in action. And in my experience, it's most acute among entrepreneurs and high-net-worth individuals post-exit, many of whom are navigating wealth independently for the first time. It's human nature to crave certainty, especially when it comes to money, but if you're waiting for a time when everything is calm, clear, and safe before investing or making a financial decision, I've got bad news – that day is never going to arrive. Markets move, the political climate is noisy, the global economy is always in flux. If you're frozen by fear, your money isn't standing still – it's slipping backwards. ... Entrepreneurs are used to taking calculated risks, but when it comes to managing post-exit wealth or personal finances, many find themselves out of their depth. A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing – and half-understanding the tax system, the economy, or the markets can lead to costly mistakes.


The Future of Agile Isn’t ‘agile’

One reason is that agilists introduced too many conflicting and divergent approaches that fragmented the market. “Agile” meant so many things to different people that hiring managers could never predict what they were getting when a candidate’s resume indicated s/he was “experienced in agile development.” Another reason organizations failed to generate value with “agile” was that too many agile approaches focused on changing practices or culture while ignoring the larger delivery system in which the practices operate, reinforcing a culture that is resistant to change. This shouldn’t be a surprise to people following our industry, as my colleague and LeadingAgile CEO Mike Cottmeyer has been talking about why agile fails for over a decade, such as his Agile 2014 presentation, Why is Agile Failing in Large Enterprises… …and what you can do about it. The final reason that led “agile” to its current state of disfavor is that early in the agile movement there was too much money to be made in training and certifications. The industry’s focus on certifications had the effect over time of misaligning the goals of the methodology / training companies and their customers. “Train everyone. Launch trains” may be a short-term success pattern for a methodology purveyor, but it is ultimately unsustainable because the training and practices are too disconnected from tangible results senior executives need to compete and win in the market.


CIOs get serious about closing the skills gap — mainly from within

Staffing and talent issues are affecting CIOs’ ability to double down on strategic and innovation objectives, according to 54% of this year’s respondents. As a result, closing the skills gap has become a huge priority. “What’s driving it in some CIOs’ minds is tied back to their AI deployments,” says Mark Moccia, a vice president research director at Forrester. “They’re under a lot of cost pressure … to get the most out of AI deployments” to increase operational efficiencies and lower costs, he says. “It’s driving more of a need to close the skills gap and find people who have deployed AI successfully.” AI, generative AI, and cybersecurity top the list of skills gaps preventing organizations from achieving objectives, according to an April Gartner report. Nine out of 10 organizations have adopted or plan to adopt skills-based talent growth to address those challenges. ... The best approach, Karnati says, is developing talent from within. “We’re equipping our existing teams with the space, tools, and support needed to explore genAI through practical application, including rapid prototyping, internal hackathons, and proof-of-concept sprints,” Karnati says. “These aren’t just technical exercises — they’re structured opportunities for cross-functional learning, where engineers, product leads, and domain experts collaborate to test real use cases.”


The Critical Quantum Timeline: Where Are We Now And Where Are We Heading?

Technically, the term is fault-tolerant quantum computing. The qubits that quantum computers use to process data have to be kept in a delicate state – sometimes frozen to temperatures very close to absolute zero – in order to stay stable and not “decohere”. Keeping them in this state for longer periods of time requires large amounts of energy but is necessary for more complex calculations. Recent research by Google, among others, is pointing the way towards developing more robust and resilient quantum methods. ... One of the most exciting prospects ahead of us involves applying quantum computing to AI. Firstly, many AI algorithms involve solving the types of problems that quantum computers excel at, such as optimization problems. Secondly, with its ability to more accurately simulate and model the physical world, it will generate huge amounts of synthetic data. ... Looking beyond the next two decades, quantum computing will be changing the world in ways we can’t even imagine yet, just as the leap to transistors and microchips enabled the digital world and the internet of today. It will tackle currently impossible problems, help us create fantastic new materials with amazing properties and medicines that affect our bodies in new ways, and help us tackle huge problems like climate change and cleaning the oceans.

Every technological leap will be used against you - Information technology is a discipline built largely on rapid advances. Some of these technological leaps can help improve your ability to secure the enterprise. But every last one of them brings new challenges from a security perspective, not the least of which is how they will be used to attack your systems, networks, and data. ... No matter how good you are, your organization will be victimized - This is a hard one to swallow, but if we take the “five stages of grief” approach to cybersecurity, it’s better to reach the “acceptance” level than to remain in denial because much of what happens is simply out of your control. A global survey of 1,309 IT and security professionals found that 79% of organizations suffered a cyberattack within the past 12 months, up from 68% just a year ago, according to cybersecurity vendor Netwrix’s Hybrid Security Trends Report. ... Breach blame will fall on you — and the fallout could include personal liability - As if getting victimized by a security breach isn’t enough, new Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) rules put CISOs in the crosshairs for potential criminal prosecution. The new rules, which went into effect in 2023, require publicly listed companies to report any material cybersecurity incident within four business days.


Are you an A(I)ction man?

Whilst individually AI-generated action figures have a small impact - a drop in the ocean you could say - trends like this exemplify how easy it is to use AI en masse, and collectively create an ocean of demand. Seeing the number of individuals, even those with knowledge of AI’s lofty resource consumption, partaking in the creation of these avatars, makes me wonder if we need greater awareness of the collective impact of GenAI. Now, I want to take a moment to clarify this is not a criticism of those producing AI-generated content, or of anyone who has taken part in the ‘action figure’ trend. I’ve certainly had many goes with DALL-E for fun, and taken part in various trends in my time, but the volume of these recent images caught my attention. Many of the conversations I had at Connect New York a few weeks ago addressed sustainability and the need for industry collaboration, but perhaps we should also be instilling more awareness from an end-user point of view. After all, ChatGPT, according to the Washington Post, consumes 39.8 million kWh per day. I’d be fascinated to see the full picture of power and water consumption from the AI-generated action figures. Whilst it will only account for a tiny fraction of overall demand, these drops can have a tendency to accumulate. 


The MVP Dilemma: Scale Now or Scale Later?

Teams often have few concrete requirements about scalability. The business may not be a reliable source of information but, as we noted above, they do have a business case that has implicit scalability needs. It’s easy for teams to focus on functional needs, early on, and ignore these implicit scaling requirements. They may hope that scaling won’t be a problem or that they can solve the problem by throwing more computing resources at it. They have a legitimate concern about overbuilding and increasing costs, but hoping that scaling problems won't happen is not a good scaling strategy. Teams need to consider scaling from the start. ... The MVP often has implicit scalability requirements, such as "in order for this idea to be successful we need to recruit ten thousand new customers". Asking the right questions and engaging in collaborative dialogue can often uncover these. Often these relate to success criteria for the MVP experiment. ... Some people see asynchronous communication as another scaling panacea because it allows work to proceed independently of the task that initiated the work. The theory is that the main task can do other things while work is happening in the background. So long as the initiating task does not, at some point, need the results of the asynchronous task to proceed, asynchronous processing can help a system to scale.

Data integrity allows a business to recover quickly and completely in the event of a system failure, prevent unauthorized access to or modification of the data, and support the company’s compliance efforts. By confirming the quality of their data, businesses improve the efficiency of their data operations, increase the value of their data, and enhance collaboration and decision-making. Data Quality efforts also help companies reduce their costs, enhance employee productivity, and establish closer relationships with their customers. Implementing a data integrity strategy begins by identifying the sources of potential data corruption in your organization. These include human error, system malfunctions, unauthorized access, failure to validate and test, and lack of Governance. A data integrity plan operates at both the database level and business level.

AI is expanding the CISO’s required skillset beyond cybersecurity to include fluency in data science, machine learning fundamentals, and understanding how to evaluate AI models – not just technically, but from a governance and risk perspective. Understanding how AI works and how to use it responsibly is essential. Fortunately, AI has also evolved how we train our teams. CISOs should always prioritize accountability and transparency. Red flags to look out for include a lack of explainability or insufficient auditing capabilities, both of which leave companies vulnerable. It’s important to understand how it handles sensitive data, and whether it has proven success in similar environments. Beyond that, it’s also vital to evaluate how well the tool aligns with your governance model, that it can be audited, and that it integrates well into your existing systems. Lastly, overpromising capabilities or providing an unclear roadmap for support are signs to proceed with caution.
