Predicting the future is easy — deciding what to do is the hard part

The prescriptive analysis assists in developing strategies to optimize operations, increase profitability, and reduce risks. Traditionally, linear and non-linear programming models are used for resource allocation, supply chain management, and portfolio optimization. ... In enterprise decision-making, both predictive and prescriptive analytics play an important role. Predictive analytics enables forecasting possible business outcomes, while prescriptive analytics uses these forecasts to create a strategy to maximize business profits. However, enterprises often fail to integrate these two analytics techniques in an effective way for their own benefit. ... The integration of AI agents in predictive and prescriptive analytics workflows has not been explored much by data science professionals. However, a consolidated AI agentic framework can be developed that makes integrated use of predictive and prescriptive analytics in a combined way. ... On implementing the AI agentic framework, the industries experienced better forecasts through efficient predictive analytics. On the other hand, prescriptive analytics helped businesses in making their workflows more adaptable. Despite this success, high computational costs and explainability still remain a major challenge. To overcome these setbacks, an enterprise can further invest in developing multi-modal predictive-prescriptive AI agents and neuro-symbolic agents.

Key focus areas of the Agile Manifesto helped drastically simplify software development, Reynolds noted. By moving teams to smaller more regular releases, for example, this “shortened feedback loops” typically associated with Waterfall and improved flexibility throughout the development lifecycle. “That reduced risk made it easier to respond to customer and business needs, and genuinely improved software quality,” he told ITPro. “Smaller changes meant testing could happen continuously, rather than being bolted on at the end.” The longevity of Agile methodology is testament to its impact, and research shows it’s still highly popular. ... According to Kern, AI and Agile are “a match made in heaven” and the advent of the technology means this approach is no longer optional, albeit with a notable caveat. “You need it more than ever,” he said. “You can build so much more in less time, which can also magnify potential pitfalls if you’re not careful. The speed of delivery with AI can easily outpace feedback, but that’s an exciting opportunity, not a flaw.” Reynolds echoed those comments, noting that while Agile can be a force multiplier for teams, there are still risks – particularly with the influx of AI-generated code in software development. “Those gains are often offset downstream, creating more bugs, higher cloud costs, and greater security exposure. The real value comes when AI is extended beyond code creation into testing, quality assurance, and deployment,” he said.


CISOs must separate signal from noise as CVE volume soars

“While the number of vulnerabilities goes up, what really matters is which of these are going to be exploited,” Michael Roytman, co-founder and CTO of Empirical Security, tells CSO. “And that’s a different process. It does not depend on the number of vulnerabilities that are out there because sometimes an exploit is written before the CVE is even out there.” What FIRST’s forecast highlights instead is a growing signal-to-noise problem, one that strains already overburdened security teams and raises the stakes for prioritization, automation, and capacity planning rather than demanding that organizations patch more flaws exponentially. ... Despite the scale of the forecast, experts stress that vulnerability volume alone is a poor proxy for enterprise risk. “The risk to an enterprise is not directly related to the number of vulnerabilities released,” Empirical Security’s Roytman says. “It is a separate process.” ... For CISOs, the implication is that patching strategies are now more about scaling decision-making processes that were already under strain. ... The cybersecurity industry is not facing an explosion of exploitable weaknesses so much as an explosion of information. For CISOs, success in 2026 will depend less on reacting faster and more on deciding better — using automation and context to ensure that rising vulnerability counts do not translate into rising risk. “It hasn’t been a human-scale problem for some time now,” Roytman says.

OT Attacks Get Scary With 'Living-off-the-Plant' Techniques

For a number of reasons, ransomware against IT is affecting OT," Derbyshire explains. "This can occur due to, for example, convergences within the IT environment, that the OT simply cannot function without relying upon. Or a complete lack of trust in security controls or network architecture from the IT or OT security teams, so they voluntarily shut down the OT systems or sever the connection to kind of prevent the spread [of an IT attack]. Colonial Pipeline style. ... With a holistic understanding of how OT works, and knowledge of how a given OT site works, suddenly new threat vectors come into focus, which can blend with operational systems as elegantly as LotL attacks do Windows or Linux systems. For instance, Derbyshire plans to demonstrate at RSAC how an attacker can weaponize S7comm, Siemens' proprietary protocol for communication between programmable logic controllers (PLCs). He'll show how, by manipulating frequently overlooked configuration fields in S7comm, an attacker could potentially leak sensitive data and transmit attacks across devices. He calls it "an absolute brain melter." ... there are plenty of resources attackers can turn to to understand OT products better, be they textbooks, chatbots, or even just buying a PLC on a secondhand marketplace. "It still takes a bit of investment or a bit of time going out of your way to find these obscure things. But it's never been impossible and it's only getting easier," Derbyshire says.

Cyber firms face ‘verification crisis’ on real risk

Continuous Threat Exposure Management, commonly referred to as CTEM, has become more widely adopted as a way to structure security work around an organisation's exposure to attack. Even so, only 33% of organisations measure whether exploitable risk is actually reduced over time, according to the report. Instead, most programmes continue to track metrics focused on discovery and volume, such as coverage gaps, asset counts and alert volume. These measures can show rising activity and expanding scope, but they do not necessarily show whether the organisation has reduced the likelihood of a successful attack. "Security programs keep adding tools and expanding scope, but outcomes aren't improving," said Rogier Fischer, CEO and co-founder of Hadrian. ... According to the report, these vulnerabilities were not unknown. They were identified and recorded, but competed for attention as security teams dealt with new alerts, new tickets and the ongoing output of multiple tools. In organisations with complex technology estates, this can create a persistent backlog in which older issues remain unresolved while new potential risks continue to surface. "Security teams can move fast, but too many tools and unverified alerts make it difficult to maintain focus on what actually matters," Fischer said. The report calls for earlier validation of exploitability and success measures that focus on reducing real exposure rather than the number of findings generated.


Trust and Compliance in the Age of AI: Navigating the Risks of Intelligent Software Development

One of the most pressing challenges is trust in AI-generated outputs: Many teams report minimal productivity gains despite operational deployment, citing issues such as hallucinated code, misleading suggestions, and a lack of explainability. This trust gap is amplified by the opaque nature of many AI systems; developers often report struggling to understand how models arrive at decisions, making it difficult for them to validate outputs or debug errors. This lack of transparency, known as black box AI, puts teams at risk of accepting flawed code or test cases, potentially introducing vulnerabilities or performance regressions. ... AI's reliance on data introduces significant compliance risks, especially when proprietary documentation or sensitive datasets are used to train models. Another risk with potentially serious consequences: AI-generated code often lacks context. It may not align with architectural patterns, business rules, or compliance requirements, and without rigorous review, these changes can degrade system integrity and increase technical debt. It also must be noted that faster code generation does not equal better code. There is a risk of "bloated" or unsecure code being generated, requiring rigorous validation.


The Cost of AI Slop in Lines of Code

Before we can get to the problem of excessive lines of code, we need to understand how LLMs arrived at the generation of code with unnecessary lines. The answer is in the training dataset and how that dataset was sourced from publicly accessible places, including open repositories on Github and coding websites. These sources lack any form of quality control, and therefore the code the LLMs learned on is of varying quality. ... In the quest to get as much training data as possible, there was little effort available to vet the training data to ensure that it was good training data. The result LLMs outputting the kind of code written by a first-year developer – and that should be concerning to us. ... Some of the common vulnerabilities that we’ve known about for decades, including cross-site scripting, SQL injection, and log injection, are the kinds of vulnerabilities that AI introduces into the code – and it generates this code at rates that are multiples of what even junior developers produce. In a time when it’s important that we be more cautious about security, AI can’t do it. ... Today, we have AI generating bloated code that creates maintenance problems, and we’re looking the other way. It can’t structure code to minimize code duplication. It doesn’t care that there are two, three, four, or more implementations of basic operations that could be made into one generic function. The code it was trained on didn’t generate the abstractions to create the right functions, so it can’t get there.

Scale and implications matter profoundly; a customer chatbot may have fewer jurisdictional considerations than an internal threat intelligence platform.

When a new chief digital officer arrives, what does that mean for the CIO?

One reason the CDO can unsettle CIOs is that the title has never had a consistent meaning. Isaac Sacolick, president and founder of StarCIO, said organizations typically create the role for one of two reasons. "Some organizations split off a CDO role because the CIO is overly focused on infrastructure and operations, and the business's customer and employee experiences, AI and data initiatives, and other innovations aren't meeting expectations," Sacolick said. "In other organizations, the CDO is a C-level title for the head of product management and UX/design functions, and reports to the CIO." Those two models lead to very different outcomes. In the first, the CDO is positioned as a corrective measure; in the second, the role is an extension of the CIO's broader operating model. Without clarity on which model is being pursued, confusion tends to follow. ... Across the experts, there was strong agreement on one point: The CIO remains central to the enterprise digital operating model, even as new roles emerge. "CIOs need to own the digital operating model and evolve it for the AI era," Sacolick said, noting that this increasingly involves "product-centric, agile, multi-disciplinary team organizational models." Ratcliffe echoed that sentiment, emphasizing accountability and trust. "The CIO should be the single point of ownership with the deep expertise feeding into it so there is consistency, business acumen and trust built within the technology function," he said.


Responsible AI moves from principle to practice, but data and regulatory gaps persist: Nasscom

The data shows a strong correlation between AI maturity and responsible practices. Nearly 60% of companies that say they are confident about scaling AI responsibly already have mature RAI frameworks in place. Large enterprises are leading this transition, with 46% reporting mature practices. Startups and SMEs trail behind at 16% and 20% respectively, but Nasscom sees this as ecosystem-wide momentum rather than a gap, given the growing willingness among smaller firms to learn, comply, and invest. ... Workforce enablement has become a central pillar of this transition. Nearly nine out of ten organisations surveyed are investing in sensitisation and training around Responsible AI. Companies report the highest confidence in meeting data protection obligations—reflecting relatively mature privacy frameworks—but monitoring-related compliance continues to be a concern. Accountability for AI governance still sits largely at the top. ... As AI systems become more autonomous, Responsible AI is increasingly seen as the deciding factor for whether organisations can scale with confidence. Nearly half of mature organisations believe their current frameworks are prepared to handle emerging technologies such as agentic AI. At the same time, industry experts caution that most existing frameworks will need substantial updates to address new categories of risk introduced by more autonomous systems. The report concludes that sustained investment in skills, governance mechanisms, high-quality data, and continuous monitoring will be essential.


AI-induced cultural stagnation is no longer speculation − it’s already happening

Regardless of how diverse the starting prompts were – and regardless of how much randomness the systems were allowed – the outputs quickly converged onto a narrow set of generic, familiar visual themes: atmospheric cityscapes, grandiose buildings and pastoral landscapes. Even more striking, the system quickly “forgot” its starting prompt. ... For the past few years, skeptics have warned that generative AI could lead to cultural stagnation by flooding the web with synthetic content that future AI systems then train on. Over time, the argument goes, this recursive loop would narrow diversity and innovation. Champions of the technology have pushed back, pointing out that fears of cultural decline accompany every new technology. Humans, they argue, will always be the final arbiter of creative decisions. ... The study shows that when meaning is forced through such pipelines repeatedly, diversity collapses not because of bad intentions, malicious design or corporate negligence, but because only certain kinds of meaning survive the text-to-image-to-text repeated conversions. This does not mean cultural stagnation is inevitable. Human creativity is resilient. Institutions, subcultures and artists have always found ways to resist homogenization. But in my view, the findings of the study show that stagnation is a real risk – not a speculative fear – if generative systems are left to operate in their current iteration.

One-time SMS links that never expire can expose personal data for years

One of the most significant findings involved how long these links remained active. All 701 confirmed URLs still worked when the researchers accessed them, often long after the original message was sent. More than half of the exposed links were between one and two years old. About 46% were older than two years. Some dated back to 2019. Public SMS gateways rarely retain messages for that long, which suggests that the actual lifetime of many links may extend even further. The risk starts as soon as a private link is exposed, but it grows with time. The longer a link stays active, the more chances there are for abuse through logs, forwarding, compromised devices, message interception, phone number recycling, or third-party access. ... In many services, the link carried a token passed to backend APIs. Some pages rendered data server side, while others fetched information after load. Only five services placed personal data directly inside the URL itself, though access results were similar once the link was opened. This design assumes the link remains private. According to Danish, product pressure plays a central role in keeping this pattern widespread. ... In one case, an order tracking page displayed an address, while API responses included phone numbers, geolocation data, and driver details. In another, a loan service returned bank routing numbers and Social Security numbers that were only visible in network logs. This data became reachable as soon as the link was opened, even before the page finished loading.

Half of agentic AI projects are still stuck at the pilot stage

The main barriers to full implementation, respondents said, are concerns with security, privacy, or compliance, cited by 52%, followed by technical challenges to managing agents at scale, at 51%. “Organizations are not slowing adoption because they question the value of AI, but because scaling autonomous systems safely requires confidence that those systems will behave reliably and as intended in real-world conditions,” said Alois Reitbauer, chief technology strategist at Dynatrace. Seven-in-ten agentic AI–powered decisions are still verified by humans, and 87% of organizations are actively building or deploying agents that require human supervision. ... A recurring pain point for enterprises tinkering with agentic AI tools lies in observability, according to Dynatrace. The culture you can’t see is running your security operations

Non-observable culture is everything happening inside people’s heads. Their beliefs about cyber risk. Their attitudes toward security. Their values and priorities when security conflicts with convenience or speed. This is where the real decisions get made. You can’t see someone’s belief that “we’re too small to be targeted” or “security is IT’s job, not mine.” You can’t measure their assumption that compliance equals security. You can’t audit their gut feeling that reporting a mistake will hurt their career. But these invisible forces shape every security decision your people make. Non-observable culture includes beliefs about the likelihood and severity of threats. It includes how people weigh security against productivity. It includes their trust in leadership and their willingness to admit mistakes. It includes all the cognitive biases that distort risk perception. ... Implicit culture is the stuff nobody talks about because nobody even realizes it’s there. The unspoken assumptions. The invisible norms. The “way things are done here” that everyone knows but nobody questions. This is the most powerful layer because it operates below conscious awareness. People don’t choose to follow implicit norms. AWS European cloud service launch raises questions over sovereignty

AWS established a new legal entity to operate the European Sovereign Cloud under a separate governance and operational model. The new company is incorporated in Germany and run exclusively by EU residents, AWS said. ... “This is the elephant in the room,” said Rene Buest, senior director analyst at Gartner. There are two main concerns regarding the operation of AWS’s European Sovereign Cloud for businesses in Europe. The first relates to the 2018 US Cloud Act, which could require AWS to disclose customer data stored in Europe to the United States, if requested by US authorities. The second involves the possibility of US government sanctions: If a business that uses AWS services is subject to such sanctions, AWS may be compelled to block that company’s access to its cloud services, even if its data and operations are based in Europe. ... It’s an open question at this stage, said Dario Maisto, senior analyst at Forrester. “Cases will have to be tested in court before we can have a definite answer,” he said. “The legal ownership does matter, and this is one of the points that may not be addressed by the current setup of the AWS sovereign cloud.” AWS’s European Sovereign Cloud represents one of several ways that European business can approach the challenge of digital sovereignty. Larger enterprises, particularly those with broader risk and compliance functions, also report higher uptake. In smaller organizations, or those where privacy has limited visibility at the leadership level, AI adoption remains tentative. Teams that apply privacy principles throughout system development report higher use of AI for privacy tasks. In these environments, AI supports ongoing work rather than introducing new approaches. ... Respondents working in organizations where privacy has active board backing report more consistent use of privacy by design. Budget stability shows a similar pattern, with better-funded teams reporting stronger integration of privacy into design and engineering work. The study also shows that privacy by design on its own does not stop breaches. Organizations that experienced breaches report similar levels of design practice as those that did not. The data places privacy by design mainly in a governance and compliance role, with limited connection to incident prevention. ... Governance shapes how teams view that risk. Professionals in organizations where privacy lacks board priority report higher expectations of a breach in the coming year. The sheer volume of cyber threat intelligence being generated today is overwhelming. “Information sharing channels often help condense inputs and highlight genuine signals amid industry noise,” says Caitlin Condon, VP of security research at VulnCheck. “The very nature of cyber threat intelligence demands validation, context, and comparison. Information sharing allows cybersecurity professionals to more rigorously assess rising threats, identify new trends and deviations, and develop technically comprehensive guidance.” ... “The importance of the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2015 for U.S. national security cannot be overstated,” says Crystal Morin, cybersecurity strategist at Sysdig. “Without legal protections, many legal departments would advise security teams to pull back from sharing threat intelligence, resulting in slower, more cautious processes. ...” CISOs have developed their own closed communities where they can discuss current incidents with other CISOs. This is done via channels such as Slack, WhatsApp and Signal. Six data shifts that will shape enterprise AI in 2026

While RAG won't entirely disappear in 2026, one approach that will likely surpass it in terms of usage for agentic AI is contextual memory, also known as agentic or long-context memory. This technology enables LLMs to store and access pertinent information over extended periods. Multiple such systems emerged over the course of 2025 including Hindsight, A-MEM framework, General Agentic Memory (GAM), LangMem, and Memobase. Technical debt drains companies of time, money and even customers. It arises whenever speed is prioritized over quality in software development, often driven by the pressure to accelerate time to market. In such cases, immediate delivery takes precedence, while long-term sustainability is compromised. "Unlike a human being, software doesn’t give up in frustration, or try to modify its approach, when it repeatedly fails at the same task," she wrote. Automation "is great when those renewals succeed, but it also means that forgotten clients and devices can continue requesting renewals unsuccessfully for months, or even years." To solve the problem, the organization has adopted rate limiting and will pause account-hostname pairs, immediately rejecting any requests for a renewal. ... Automation is key to tackling the issue of zombie services, devices, and code. Scanning the package manifests in software, for example, is not enough, because nearly two-thirds of vulnerabilities are transitive — they occur in software package imported by another software package. Scanning manifests only catches about 77% of dependencies, says Black Duck's McGuire. "Focus on components that are both outdated and contain high [or] critical-risk vulnerabilities — de-prioritize everything else," he says. "Institute a strict and regular update cadence for open source components — you need to treat the maintenance of a third-party library with the same rigor you treat your own code." AI poses an even more complex set of problems, says Tenable's Avni. For one, AI services span across a variety of endpoints. Some are software-as-a-service (SaaS), some are integrated into applications, and others are AI agents running on endpoints. 


Are room-temperature superconductors finally within reach?

Predicting superconductivity -- especially in materials that could operate at higher temperatures -- has remained an unsolved challenge. Existing theories have long been considered accurate only for low-temperature superconductors, explained Zi-Kui Liu, a professor of materials science and engineering at Penn State. ... For decades, scientists have relied on the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory to describe how conventional superconductors function at extremely low temperatures. According to this theory, electrons move without resistance because of interactions with vibrations in the atomic lattice, called phonons. These interactions allow electrons to pair up into what are known as Cooper pairs, which move in sync through the material, avoiding atomic collisions and preventing energy loss as heat. ... The breakthrough centers on a concept called zentropy theory. This approach merges principles from statistical mechanics, which studies the collective behavior of many particles, with quantum physics and modern computational modeling. Zentropy theory links a material's electronic structure to how its properties change with temperature, revealing when it transitions from a superconducting to a non-superconducting state. To apply the theory, scientists must understand how a material behaves at absolute zero (zero Kelvin), the coldest temperature possible, where all atomic motion ceases.


Beyond Accidental Quality: Finding Hidden Bugs with Generative Testing

Automated tests are the cornerstone of modern software development. They ensure that every time we build new functionalities, we do not break existing features our users rely on. Traditionally, we tackle this with example-based tests. We list specific scenarios (or test cases) that verify the expected behaviour. In a banking application, we might write a test to assert that transferring $100 to a friend’s bank account changes their balance from $180 to $280. However, example-based tests have a critical flaw. The quality of our software depends on the examples in our test suites. This leaves out a class of scenarios that the authors of the test did not envision – the "unknown unknowns". Generative testing is a more robust method of testing software. It shifts our focus from enumerating examples to verifying the fundamental invariant properties of our system. ... generative tests try to break the property with randomized inputs. The goal is to ensure that invariants of the system are not violated for a wide variety of inputs. Essentially, it is a three step process:Given a property (aka invariant); Generate varying inputs; To find the smallest input for which the property does not hold. As opposed to traditional test cases, inputs that trigger a bug are not written in the test – they are found by the test engine. That is crucial because finding counter examples to code written by us is not easy or an accurate process. Some bugs simply hide in plain sight – even in basic arithmetic operations like addition.


Learning from the AWS outage: Actions and resources

Drawing on lessons from this and previous incidents, here are three essential steps every organization should take. First, review your architecture and deploy real redundancy. Leverage multiple availability zones within your primary cloud provider and seriously consider multiregion and even multicloud resilience for your most critical workloads. If your business cannot tolerate extended downtime, these investments are no longer optional. Second, review and update your incident response and disaster recovery plans. Theoretical processes aren’t enough. Regularly test and simulate outages at the technical and business process levels. Ensure that playbooks are accurate, roles and responsibilities are clear, and every team knows how to execute under stress. Fast, coordinated responses can make the difference between a brief disruption and a full-scale catastrophe. Third, understand your cloud contracts and SLAs and negotiate better terms if possible. Speak with your providers about custom agreements if your scale can justify them. Document outages carefully and file claims promptly. More importantly, factor the actual risks—not just the “guaranteed” uptime—into your business and customer SLAs. Cloud outages are no longer rare. As enterprises deepen their reliance on the cloud, the risks rise. The most resilient businesses will treat each outage as a crucial learning opportunity to strengthen both technical defenses and contractual agreements before the next problem occurs.
