AI web browsers are cool, helpful, and utterly untrustworthy

AI browsers can and do interact with everything on a web page: summarizing content, reading emails, composing posts, looking at images, etc., etc. Every element on the page, whether you can see it or not, can hide an attack. A hacker can embed clipboard manipulations or other hacks that traditional browsers would never, not ever, execute automatically. ... AI browser agents can be tricked by hidden instructions embedded in websites via invisible text, images, scripts, or, believe it or not, bad grammar. Your eyes might glaze over at a long run-on sentence, but your AI web browser will read it all, including instructions for an attack hidden in plain sight within it. Such malicious commands are read and executed by the AI. This can lead to exposure of sensitive data, such as emails, authentication tokens, and login details, or triggering unwanted actions, including sending emails, posting to social media, or giving your computer a bad case of malware. ... Privacy is pretty much lost these days anyway, but with AI web browsers, we’ll have all the privacy of a goldfish in a bowl. Since AI browsers monitor our every last move, they process much more granular personal information than conventional browsers. Worrying about cookies and privacy is so 1990s. AI browsers track everything. This is then used to create highly detailed behavioral profiles. What? You didn’t know that AI browsers have built-in memory functions that retain your interactions, browser history, and content from other apps? How do you think they do what they do? Intuition? ESP?


AI can flag the risk, but only humans can close the loop

Companies embedding AI into vendor risk processes need governance structures that ensure transparency, accountability, and compliance. This includes maintaining an approved sources catalogue and requiring either the system or an analyst to validate findings and document the rationale behind them. Data minimization should be built into the design by defining what information is always in scope, such as sanctions or embargo lists, and what is contextually relevant, while excluding protected or sensitive attributes under GDPR and configuring AI to ignore them. Risk assessments should be tiered, calibrating the depth of checks to supplier criticality and geography to avoid unnecessary data collection for low-risk relationships while expanding scope for high-risk scenarios. Human accountability remains essential, with a named individual owning due diligence decisions while AI provides recommendations without replacing human judgment ... Regulators are likely to allow AI use if firms establish strong controls and demonstrate effective oversight, as required by frameworks like the EU AI Act. Responsibility remains with individuals or organizations; liability does not transfer to AI itself. While regulators may struggle to specify detailed technical rules, one clear shift is that “the data volume was too large to review” will no longer be an acceptable defense.

Cloud Identity Exposure Is 'a Critical Point of Failure'

Attackers keep targeting cloud-based identities to help them bypass endpoint and network defenses, says an August report from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. That report counts a 136% increase in cloud intrusions over the preceding 12 months, plus a 40% year-on-year increase in cloud intrusions tied to threat actors likely working for the Chinese government. "The cloud is a priority target for both criminals and nation-state threat actors," said Adam Meyers, head of counter adversary operations at CrowdStrike ... One challenge is that enough cloud identities justify elevated permissions, putting organizations at elevated risk when their credentials are exposed. Take security operations centers and incident response teams. In general, while "the principle of least privilege and minimal manual access" is a best practice, first responders often need immediate and "necessary access," says an August report from Darktrace. "Security teams need access to logs, snapshots and configuration data to understand how an attack unfolded, but giving blanket access opens the door to insider threats, misconfigurations and lateral movement." Rather than always allowing such access, experts recommend using tools that only provide it when needed, for example, through Amazon Web Services' Security Token Service. "Leveraging temporary credentials, such as AWS STS tokens, allows for just-in-time access during an investigation" that can be automatically revoked after, which "reduces the window of opportunity for potential attackers to exploit elevated permissions," Darktrace said.

What does aligning security to the business really mean?

“Alignment to me means that information security supports the strategy of the organization,” says Sattler, who also serves as a board director with the governance association ISACA. ... “It’s not enough to say it; you actually have to do it,” she explains. “There is a contingent of cybersecurity that sees itself as an island, implementing defense in depth in every corner of the organization, adopting all these frameworks and standards, but there is diminishing returns in doing that. So instead of saying, ‘This is our cybersecurity discipline and we’re doing all these things because the benchmarks tell us to,’ CISOs have to align their efforts to their organization’s business model.” ... To align, she says, security leaders must “know the objectives the business has and use those to shape strategy, whether it’s cost containment, going into new markets, adopting cloud. The playbook starts from understanding the organizational priorities and then layering in what threat actors are doing in that industry and what could go wrong, what is the risk we can live with, and understanding and articulating the business impact of security incidents.” ... “When security is not aligned, security is reacting to changes rather than shaping changes,” says Matt Gorham. “But when security isn’t chasing the business it’s because it’s at the table from the beginning and is saying, ‘Here’s how I can help the business grow and grow securely.’”


CISO Burnout – Epidemic, Endemic, or Simply Inevitable?

“Burnout and PTSD are different conditions, though they can coexist and share some symptoms,” says Ventura. “The constant hypervigilance required in our roles can mirror PTSD symptoms, and some cyber security professionals do experience what could be considered secondary trauma from constantly dealing with the aftermath of cyber-attacks.” Experiencing trauma can make you more susceptible to burnout, and burnout can exacerbate existing trauma responses. “Both conditions are serious and treatable, but they require different approaches,” she suggests. And both are further complicated by neurodivergence, a characteristic that is particularly prevalent in cybersecurity, and especially among CISOs. ... “From my experience working with senior cyber security leaders,” she continues, “burnout also affects their ability to lead their teams effectively. They become less empathetic, more prone to micromanaging, and, ironically, more likely to create the very conditions that lead to burnout in their staff. The strategic thinking that makes a great CISO (the ability to see the big picture, anticipate threats, and balance risk with business needs) gets clouded by exhaustion and cynicism. Perhaps most dangerously, burned-out CISOs often develop tunnel vision, focusing obsessively on certain threats while missing others entirely. When the person responsible for an organization’s entire security posture is running on empty, everyone is at risk.”

Unmanaged identities present a clear and present danger to organizations. They increase the risk of security breaches, compliance failures, and operational disruptions. It is imperative for organizations to prioritize identity discovery and management as a core security practice.

Initially, cloud environments were largely interchangeable from a governance, compliance, and security perspective. It didn't really matter exactly which cloud data center hosted an organization's workloads, or which jurisdiction the data center was located in. Power plants and transmission/distribution system operators (TSOs and DSOs) have long focused on maintaining uptime and enhancing the resilience of their services; keeping the lights on is always the goal. Was data mesh just a fad?

A polar opposite approach from a data lake, a data mesh gives the source team ownership of the data and the responsibility to distribute the dataset. Other teams access the data from the source system directly, rather than from a centralized data lake. The data mesh was designed to be everything that the data lake system wasn’t. ... Beneath the surface, almost every bottleneck between data providers and data consumers became an implementation challenge. The thing is, the data mesh approach isn’t a once-and-done change, but a long-term commitment to prepare a data schema in a certain way. Although every source team owns their dataset, they must maintain a schema that allows downstream systems to read the data, rather than replicating it. ... In essence, data mesh is a shift in mindset, one that completely changes the way you view data. Smaller, Smarter, Faster: AI Will Scale Differently in 2026

"Technology leaders face a pivotal year in 2026, where disruption, innovation and risk are expanding at unprecedented speed," said Gene Alvarez, distinguished vice president analyst at Gartner. "The top strategic technology trends identified for 2026 are tightly interwoven and reflect the realities of an AI-powered, hyperconnected world where organizations must drive responsible innovation, operational excellence and digital trust." The centerpiece of that thesis is the pivot from large, general-purpose LLMs to domain-specific language models, or DSLMs, and modular multiagent systems, MAS, designed to execute and audit business workflows. AI, SaaS, and personal devices are changing how people get work done, but the tools that protect company systems have not kept up, according to 1Password. Tools like SSO, MDM, and IAM no longer align with how employees and AI agents access data. The result is what researchers call the “access-trust gap,” a growing distance between what organizations think they can control and how employees and AI systems access company data. The survey tracks four areas where this gap is widening: AI governance, SaaS and shadow IT, credentials, and endpoint security. Each shows the same pattern of rapid adoption and limited oversight. ... Organizations now rely on hundreds of cloud apps, most outside IT’s visibility. Over half of employees admit they have downloaded work tools without permission, often because approved options are slower or lack needed features. This behavior drives SaaS sprawl. 70% of security professionals say SSO tools are not a complete solution for securing identities. On average, only about two-thirds of enterprise apps sit behind SSO, leaving a large portion unmanaged. Offboarding gaps make the problem worse. 38% of employees say they have accessed a former employer’s account or data after leaving the company. ... In Amazon’s detailed post-mortem report, the cloud giant detailed a vast array of delicate systems that keeps global operations functioning — at least, most of the time. ... “The outage exposed how deeply interdependent and fragile our systems have become. It doesn’t provide any confidence that it won’t happen again. ‘Improved safeguards’ and ‘better change management’ sound like procedural fixes, but they’re not proof of architectural resilience. If AWS wants to win back enterprise confidence, it needs to show hard evidence that one regional incident can’t cascade across its global network again. Right now, customers still carry most of that risk themselves.” ... Ellis agreed with others that AWS didn’t detail why this cascading failure happened on that day, which makes it difficult for enterprise IT executives to have high confidence that something similar won’t happen in a month. “They talked about what things failed and not what caused the failure. Typically, failures like this are caused by a change in the environment. Someone wrote a script and it changed something or they hit a threshold. Technical debt drains companies of time, money and even customers. It arises whenever speed is prioritized over quality in software development, often driven by the pressure to accelerate time to market. In such cases, immediate delivery takes precedence, while long-term sustainability is compromised. The Twitter Fail Whale incident between 2007 and 2012 is testimony to the adage: "Haste makes waste." ... "Unlike a human being, software doesn’t give up in frustration, or try to modify its approach, when it repeatedly fails at the same task," she wrote. Automation "is great when those renewals succeed, but it also means that forgotten clients and devices can continue requesting renewals unsuccessfully for months, or even years." To solve the problem, the organization has adopted rate limiting and will pause account-hostname pairs, immediately rejecting any requests for a renewal. ... Automation is key to tackling the issue of zombie services, devices, and code. Scanning the package manifests in software, for example, is not enough, because nearly two-thirds of vulnerabilities are transitive — they occur in software package imported by another software package. Scanning manifests only catches about 77% of dependencies, says Black Duck's McGuire. "Focus on components that are both outdated and contain high [or] critical-risk vulnerabilities — de-prioritize everything else," he says. "Institute a strict and regular update cadence for open source components — you need to treat the maintenance of a third-party library with the same rigor you treat your own code." AI poses an even more complex set of problems, says Tenable's Avni. For one, AI services span across a variety of endpoints. Some are software-as-a-service (SaaS), some are integrated into applications, and others are AI agents running on endpoints. 


Are room-temperature superconductors finally within reach?

Predicting superconductivity -- especially in materials that could operate at higher temperatures -- has remained an unsolved challenge. Existing theories have long been considered accurate only for low-temperature superconductors, explained Zi-Kui Liu, a professor of materials science and engineering at Penn State. ... For decades, scientists have relied on the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory to describe how conventional superconductors function at extremely low temperatures. According to this theory, electrons move without resistance because of interactions with vibrations in the atomic lattice, called phonons. These interactions allow electrons to pair up into what are known as Cooper pairs, which move in sync through the material, avoiding atomic collisions and preventing energy loss as heat. ... The breakthrough centers on a concept called zentropy theory. This approach merges principles from statistical mechanics, which studies the collective behavior of many particles, with quantum physics and modern computational modeling. Zentropy theory links a material's electronic structure to how its properties change with temperature, revealing when it transitions from a superconducting to a non-superconducting state. To apply the theory, scientists must understand how a material behaves at absolute zero (zero Kelvin), the coldest temperature possible, where all atomic motion ceases.


Beyond Accidental Quality: Finding Hidden Bugs with Generative Testing

Automated tests are the cornerstone of modern software development. They ensure that every time we build new functionalities, we do not break existing features our users rely on. Traditionally, we tackle this with example-based tests. We list specific scenarios (or test cases) that verify the expected behaviour. In a banking application, we might write a test to assert that transferring $100 to a friend’s bank account changes their balance from $180 to $280. However, example-based tests have a critical flaw. The quality of our software depends on the examples in our test suites. This leaves out a class of scenarios that the authors of the test did not envision – the "unknown unknowns". Generative testing is a more robust method of testing software. It shifts our focus from enumerating examples to verifying the fundamental invariant properties of our system. ... generative tests try to break the property with randomized inputs. The goal is to ensure that invariants of the system are not violated for a wide variety of inputs. Essentially, it is a three step process:Given a property (aka invariant); Generate varying inputs; To find the smallest input for which the property does not hold. As opposed to traditional test cases, inputs that trigger a bug are not written in the test – they are found by the test engine. That is crucial because finding counter examples to code written by us is not easy or an accurate process. Some bugs simply hide in plain sight – even in basic arithmetic operations like addition.


Learning from the AWS outage: Actions and resources

Drawing on lessons from this and previous incidents, here are three essential steps every organization should take. First, review your architecture and deploy real redundancy. Leverage multiple availability zones within your primary cloud provider and seriously consider multiregion and even multicloud resilience for your most critical workloads. If your business cannot tolerate extended downtime, these investments are no longer optional. Second, review and update your incident response and disaster recovery plans. Theoretical processes aren’t enough. Regularly test and simulate outages at the technical and business process levels. Ensure that playbooks are accurate, roles and responsibilities are clear, and every team knows how to execute under stress. Fast, coordinated responses can make the difference between a brief disruption and a full-scale catastrophe. Third, understand your cloud contracts and SLAs and negotiate better terms if possible. Speak with your providers about custom agreements if your scale can justify them. Document outages carefully and file claims promptly. More importantly, factor the actual risks—not just the “guaranteed” uptime—into your business and customer SLAs. Cloud outages are no longer rare. As enterprises deepen their reliance on the cloud, the risks rise. The most resilient businesses will treat each outage as a crucial learning opportunity to strengthen both technical defenses and contractual agreements before the next problem occurs.
