Ransomware has evolved – so must our defences

Traditional defences typically monitor north-south traffic (from inside to outside the network), missing the lateral movement that characterises today’s threats. By monitoring internal traffic flows, privileged account behaviour and unusual data transfers, organisations gain the ability to identify suspicious actions in real time and contain threats before they escalate to ransomware deployment or public extortion. The ransomware attack on NASCAR illustrates this breakdown. Attackers from the Medusa ransomware group infiltrated the network using stolen credentials and quietly exfiltrated sensitive user data before launching a broader extortion campaign. Because these internal activities weren’t spotted early, the attack matured to a point of public disclosure, operational disruption and reputational harm. ... The emergence of triple extortion and the increasing sophistication of threat actors indicate that ransomware has entered a new phase. It is no longer solely about file encryption; it is about leveraging every available vector to apply maximum pressure on victims. Organisations must respond accordingly. Relying exclusively on prevention is no longer viable. Detection and response must be prioritised equally. This demands a strategic investment in technologies that provide real-time visibility, contextual insight and adaptive response capabilities.


Proof-of-Concept in 15 Minutes? AI Turbocharges Exploitation

The project, which the researchers dubbed Auto Exploit, is not the first to use LLMs for automated vulnerability research and exploit development. NVIDIA, for example, created Agent Morpheus, a generative AI application that scans for vulnerabilities and create tickets for software developers to fix the issues. Google uses an LLM dubbed Big Sleep to find software flaws in open source projects and suggest fixes. ... The Auto Exploit program shows that the ongoing development of LLM-powered software analysis and exploit generation will lead to the regular creation of proof-of-concept code in hours, not months, weeks, or even days. The median time-to-exploitation of a vulnerability in 2024 was 192 days, according to data from VulnCheck. ... Overall, the fast pace of research and quick adoption of AI tools by threat actors means that defenders do not have much time, says Khayet. In 2024, nearly 40,000 vulnerabilities were reported, but only 768 — or less than 0.2% — were exploited. If AI-augmented exploitation becomes a reality, and vulnerabilities are not only exploited faster but more widely, defenders will truly be in trouble. "We believe that exploits at machine speed demand defense at machine speed," he says. "You have to be able to create some sort of a defense as early as 10 minutes after the CVE is released, and you have to expedite, as much as you can, the fixing of the actual library or the application."

The CISO succession crisis: why companies have no plan and how to change that

Taking on the cybersecurity leader role is not just about individual skills, the way many companies are structured keeps mid-level security leaders from getting the experience they’d need to move into a CISO role. Myers points to several systemic problems that make effective succession planning tough. “For a lot of cases, the CISO role for the top job is still pretty varied within the organization, whether they’re reporting to the CIO, the CFO, or the CEO,” she explains. “That limits the strategic visibility and influence, which means that the number two doesn’t really get the executive exposure or board-level engagement needed to really step into that role.” The issue gets worse because of the way companies are set up, according to Myers. Underlying the broader, often poorly-defined AI tech are data centers, which are vast warehouses stuffed to the brim with specialized chips that transform energy into computational power, thus making all your Grok fact checks possible. The economics of data centers are fuzzy at best, as the ludicrous amount of money spent building them makes it difficult to get a full picture. In less than two years, for example, Texas revised its fiscal year 2025 cost projection on private data center projects from $130 million to $1 billion. ... By Kupperman's projections, a brand new data center will quickly become a Theseus' ship made up of some of the most expensive technology money can buy. “Technology cycles are spinning faster and faster, and some solutions are evolving so fast, that they’re now a year-long bet, not a three- or five-year bet for CIOs,” says Craig Kane ... “We are living in a period of high user expectations. Every day is a newly hyped technology, and CIOs are constantly being asked how can we, the company, take advantage of this new solution,” says Boston Dynamics CIO Chad Wright. “Technology providers can move quicker today with better development tools and practices, and this feeds the demand that customers are creating.” ... Not every CIO is switching out software as quickly as that, and Taffet, Irish, and others say they’re certainly not seeing the shelf life for all software and solutions in their enterprise shrink. Indeed, many vendors are updated their applications with new features and functions to keep pace with business and market demands — updates that help extend the life of their solutions. And core solutions generally aren’t turning over any more quickly today than they did five or 10 years ago, Kearney’s Kane says. ... AI cost pressures fuelling cloud repatriation

IBM thinks AI will present a bigger challenge than the cloud because it will be more pervasive with more new applications being built on it. Consequently, IT leaders are already nervous about the cost and value implications and are looking for ways to get ahead of the curve. Repeating the experience of cloud adoption, AI is being driven by business teams, not by back-office IT. AI is becoming a significant driver for shifting workloads back to private, on-premise systems. This is because data becomes the most critical asset, and Patel believes few enterprises are ready to give up their data to a third party at this stage. ... The cloud is an excellent platform for many workloads, just as there are certain workloads that run extremely well on a mainframe. The key is to understand workload placement: is my application best placed on a mainframe, on a private cloud or on a public cloud? As they start their AI journey, some of Apptio’s customers are not ready for their models, learning and intelligence – their strategic intellectual property – to sit in a public cloud. There are consequences when things go wrong with data, and those consequences can be severe for the executives concerned. Information sharing operates in tiers, each with specific protocols for data protection. Top tiers, involving entities like ISACs, the FBI, and DHS, have established protocols to properly share and safeguard confidential data. Other tiers may involve information and intelligence already made public, such as CVEs or other security disclosures. CISOs and their teams may seek assistance from industry groups, partnerships, or vendors to interpret current Indicators of Compromise (IOCs) and other remediation elements, even when public. Continuously improving vendor partnerships is crucial for managing platforms and programs, as strong partners will be familiar with internal operations while protecting sensitive information. ... Additionally, encouraging a culture of continuous learning and development, not just with the security team but broader technology and product teams, will empower employees, distribute expertise, and grow a more resilient and adaptable workforce.


Geopolitics is forcing the data sovereignty issue and it might just be a good thing

At London Tech Week recently UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the way that war is being fought “has changed profoundly,” adding that technology and AI are now “hard wired” into national defense. Financial fraud is widening its clutches—Can AI stay ahead?

Today, organised crime groups are running call centres staffed with human trafficking victims. These victims execute “romance baiting” schemes that combine emotional manipulation with investment fraud. The content they use? AI-generated. The payments they request? ... Fraud attempts rose significantly in a single quarter after COVID hit, and the traditional detection methods fell apart. This is why modern fraud detection systems had to evolve. Now, these systems can analyse thousands of transactions per minute, assigning risk scores that update in real-time. There was no choice. On the subject of vibe-code and low-code tools, Ramamoorthy seems quite clear-eyed about their suitability for mass-market production. “Vibe-code can accelerate you from 0 to 1 faster, but particularly with the increase in governance and privacy, you need additional rigor. For example, in India, we have started to see compliance as a framework.” In terms of the best generative tools today, he observes “Anytime I see a UI or content generated by AI—I can immediately recognize the quality that is just not there yet.”

The key is to define isolation requirements upfront and then optimize aggressively within those constraints. Make the business trade-offs explicit and measurable. When teams try to optimize first and secure second, they usually have to redo everything. However, when they establish their security boundaries, the optimization work becomes more focused and effective. ... The intersection with cost controls is immediate. You need visibility into whether your GPU resources are being utilized or just sitting idle. To counter AI cheating, companies bring back in-person job interviews

Google, Cisco and McKinsey & Co. have all re-instituted in-person interviews for some job candidates over the past year. “Remote work and advancements in AI have made it easier than ever for fake candidates to infiltrate the hiring process,” said Scott McGuckin, vice president of global talent acquisition at Cisco. “Identifying these threats is our priority, which is why we are adapting our hiring process to include increased verification steps and enhanced background checks that may involve an in-person component. ... AI has proven benefits for both job seekers and hiring managers/recruiters. Its use in the job search process grew 6.4% over the past year, while use in core tasks surged even higher, according to online employment marketplace ZipRecruiter. The share of job seekers using AI to draft and refine resumes jumped 39% over last year, while AI-assisted cover letter writing climbed 41%, and AI-based interview prep rose 44%, according to the firm. ... HR and hiring managers should insist on well-lit video interviews, watch for delays or mismatches, ask follow-up questions to spot AI use and verify resume details with background checks and geolocation data. “Some assessment or interview platforms can look at geolocation data, use this to ensure consistency with the resume and application,” Chiba said. 


How procedural memory can cut the cost and complexity of AI agents

Memories are built from an agent’s past experiences, or “trajectories.” The researchers explored storing these memories in two formats: verbatim, step-by-step actions; or distilling these actions into higher-level, script-like abstractions. For retrieval, the agent searches its memory for the most relevant past experience when given a new task. The team experimented with different methods, such vector search, to match the new task’s description to past queries or extracting keywords to find the best fit. The most critical component is the update mechanism. Memp introduces several strategies to ensure the agent’s memory evolves. ... One of the most significant findings for enterprise applications is that procedural memory is transferable. In one experiment, procedural memory generated by the powerful GPT-4o was given to a much smaller model, Qwen2.5-14B. The smaller model saw a significant boost in performance, improving its success rate and reducing the steps needed to complete tasks. According to Fang, this works because smaller models often handle simple, single-step actions well but falter when it comes to long-horizon planning and reasoning. The procedural memory from the larger model effectively fills this capability gap. This suggests that knowledge can be acquired using a state-of-the-art model, then deployed on smaller, more cost-effective models without losing the benefits of that experience.


AI Summaries a New Vector for Malware

The attack uses what researchers call "prompt overdose," a technique in which malicious instructions are repeated dozens of times within invisible HTML styled with properties such as zero opacity, white-on-white text, microscopic font sizes and off-screen positioning. When AI summarizers process this content, the repeated hidden text dominates the model's attention mechanisms, pushing legitimate visible content aside. "When processed by a summarizer, the repeated instructions typically dominate the model's context, causing them to appear prominently - and often exclusively - in the generated summary." ... Cybercriminals have been quick to adapt the technique to fool large language models rather than humans. The attack's effectiveness stems from user reliance on AI-generated summaries for quick content triage, often replacing manual review of original materials. Testing showed that the technique works across AI platforms, including commercial services like Sider.ai and custom-built browser extensions. Researchers also identified factors amplifying the attack's potential impact. Summarizers integrated into widely-used applications could enable mass distribution of social engineering lures across millions of users. The technique could lower technical barriers for ransomware deployment by providing non-technical victims with detailed execution instructions disguised as legitimate troubleshooting advice.


A scalable framework for evaluating health language models

While auto-eval techniques are well equipped to handle the increased volume of evaluation criteria, the completion of the proposed Precise Boolean rubrics by human annotators was prohibitively resource intensive. To mitigate such burden, we refined the Precise Boolean approach to dynamically filter the extensive set of rubric questions, retaining only the most pertinent criteria, conditioned on the specific data being evaluated. This data-driven adaptation, referred to as the Adaptive Precise Boolean rubric, enabled a reduction in the number of evaluations required for each LLM response. ... Current evaluation of LLMs in health often uses Likert scales. We compared this baseline to our data-driven Precise Boolean rubrics. Our results showed significantly higher inter-rater reliability using Precise Boolean rubrics, measured by intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC), compared to traditional Likert rubrics. A key advantage of our approach is its efficiency. The Adaptive Precise Boolean rubrics resulted in high inter-rater agreement of the full Precise Boolean rubric while reducing evaluation time by over 50%. This efficiency gain makes our method faster than even Likert scale evaluations, enhancing the scalability of LLM assessment. The fact that this also provides higher inter-rater reliability supports the argument that this simpler scoring also provides a higher quality signal.


Outdated Fraud Defenses Are a Green Light for Scammers Everywhere

Financial institutions get stuck in a reactive cycle, responding to breaches after the fact and relying heavily on network alerts and reissuing cards en masse to mitigate damage. That’s problematic on all fronts. It’s expensive, increases call center volume and fails to address the root problem. Beyond that, it disrupts the cardholder experience, putting the institution at risk of losing a cardholder’s trust and business. After experiencing a fraudulent attack, cardholders adjust their payment behaviors, regardless of whether the fraudster was successful or not. This could mean they stop using the affected card altogether, switch to a competitor’s product or close their account entirely. ... The tables are turned on the scammer. Instead of detecting fraud as it occurs, financial institutions now have up to 180 days’ lead time to identify a fraud pattern, take action and contain it. This strategic lead time enables early intervention, giving teams the ability to identify emerging fraud typologies, disrupt bad actor behavior patterns and contain the spread before widespread damage occurs. It shifts the institution’s playbook from defense to offense. It also eliminates the need to reissue thousands of cards preemptively, instead identifying small subsets of cardholders most likely to be impacted. Reissues happen only when absolutely necessary, which saves on cost and reputation management.

Unlike employees in other departments like sales, finance, marketing, and HR, who can typically log off at 5 p.m. and check out of work until the next morning, IT professionals carry the unique burden of having to be “always on.” For technology vendors in particular, this is especially prevalent; when situations arise that compromise the integrity of key systems and networks, both employees and users can face disruptions to cost organizations revenue and reputational damage. Whether it’s hardware or software issues, the system administrator is there to jump in and patch the issue. ... The researchers see their work as a “cautionary tale” about the risk of deploying large AI models for climate science. AI systems do make mistakes and these can be caught and corrected by a human, but it is not the same as the human making the mistake. In theory, these devices could be triggered remotely to shut down inverters, potentially causing widespread power disruptions. The discovery has raised fears that covert malware may have been installed in critical energy infrastructure across the U.S. and Europe, which could enable remote attacks during conflicts. ... Many OT systems were built decades ago and weren’t designed with cyber threats in mind. They often lack updates, patches, and support, and older software and hardware don’t always work with new security solutions. Upgrading them without disrupting operations is a complex task. OT systems used to be kept separate from the Internet to prevent remote attacks. The Tel Aviv-based security firm calls the problem "scamlexity," a messy intersection of human-like automation and old-fashioned social engineering creates "a new, invisible scam surface" that scales to millions of potential victims at once. In a clash between the sophistication of generative models built into browsers and the simplicity of phishing tricks that have trapped users for decades, "even the oldest tricks in the scammer's playbook become more dangerous in the hands of AI browsing." One of the headline features of AI browsers is one-click shopping. Researchers spun up a fake "Walmart" storefront complete with polished design, realistic listings and a seamless checkout flow. ... Rather than fooling a user into downloading malicious code to putatively fix a computer problem - as in ClickFix - a PromptFix attack is a malicious instruction was hidden inside what looks like a CAPTCHA. The AI treated the bogus challenge as routine, obeyed the hidden command and continued execution. AI agents are expected to ingest unstructured logs, alerts or even attacker-generated content during incident response.

Vulnerability does not necessarily equal mission risk. It is important to prioritize mitigating those vulnerabilities that impact the particular mission of that small satellite. Third, make every space professional a cyber safety officer. Unlike any other domain, there are no operations in space without the cyber domain. Emotionally connecting the safety of the cyber domain to space mission outcomes is imperative. When designing a secure satellite architecture, it is critical to design with the probability of cyber security compromises front of mind. It is not realistic to design a completely “non-hackable” architecture. However, it is realistic to design an architecture that balances protection and resilience, designing protections that make the cost of compromise high for the adversary, and resilience that makes the cost of compromise low for the mission. Security should be built in at the lowest abstraction layer of the satellite, including containerization, segmentation, redundancy and compartmentalization.


Tiny quantum dots unlock the future of unbreakable encryption

For four decades, the holy grail of quantum key distribution (QKD) -- the science of creating unbreakable encryption using quantum mechanics -- has hinged on one elusive requirement: perfectly engineered single-photon sources. These are tiny light sources that can emit one particle of light (photon) at a time. But in practice, building such devices with absolute precision has proven extremely difficult and expensive. To work around that, the field has relied heavily on lasers, which are easier to produce but not ideal. These lasers send faint pulses of light that contain a small, but unpredictable, number of photons -- a compromise that limits both security and the distance over which data can be safely transmitted, as a smart eavesdropper can "steal" the information bits that are encoded simultaneously on more than one photon. ... To prove it wasn't just theory, the team built a real-world quantum communication setup using a room-temperature quantum dot source. They ran their new reinforced version of the well-known BB84 encryption protocol -- the backbone of many quantum key distribution systems -- and showed that their approach was not only feasible but superior to existing technologies. What's more, their approach is compatible with a wide range of quantum light sources, potentially lowering the cost and technical barriers to deploying quantum-secure communication on a large scale.
