Companies that don’t have the means to hire a full-time CISO still face the same harsh realities their peers do — heightened compliance demands, escalating cyber incidents, and growing tech-related risks. A part-time security leader can help them assess their state of security and build out a program from scratch, or assist a full-time director-level security leader with a project. ... In some of these ongoing relationships this could be to fill the proverbial chair of the CISO, doing all the traditional work of the role on a part-time basis. This is the kind of arrangement most likely to be referred to as a fractional role. Other retainer arrangements may just be for an advisory position where the client is buying regular mindshare of the vCISO to supplement their tech team’s knowledge pool. They could be a strategic sounding board to the CIO or even a subject-matter expert to the director of security or newly installed CISO. But vCISOs can work on a project-by-project or hourly basis as well. “It’s really what works best for my potential client,” says Demoranville. “I don’t want to force them into a box. So, if a subscription model works or a retainer, cool. If they only want me here for a short engagement, maybe we’re trying to put in a compliance regimen for ISO 27001 or you need me to review NIST, that’s great too.”

Study Suggests Quantum Entanglement May Rewrite the Rules of Gravity

Entanglement entropy measures the degree of quantum correlation between different regions of space and plays a key role in quantum information theory and quantum computing. Because entanglement captures how information is shared across spatial boundaries, it provides a natural bridge between quantum theory and the geometric fabric of spacetime. In conventional general relativity, the curvature of spacetime is determined by the energy and momentum of matter and radiation. The new framework adds another driver: the quantum information shared between fields. This extra term modifies Einstein’s equations and offers an explanation for some of gravity’s more elusive behaviors, including potential corrections to Newton’s gravitational constant. ... What software developers need to know about cybersecurity

Training developers to write secure code shouldn’t be looked at as a one-time assignment. It requires a cultural shift. Start by making secure coding techniques are the standard practice across your team. Two of the most critical (yet frequently overlooked) practices are input validation and input sanitization. Input validation ensures incoming data is appropriate and safe for its intended use, reducing the risk of logic errors and downstream failures. Input sanitization removes or neutralizes potentially malicious content—like script injections—to prevent exploits like cross-site scripting (XSS). ... Authentication and authorization aren’t just security check boxes—they define who can access what and how. This includes access to code bases, development tools, libraries, APIs, and other assets. ... APIs may be less visible, but they form the connective tissue of modern applications. APIs are now a primary attack vector, with API attacks growing 1,025% in 2024 alone. The top security risks? Broken authentication, broken authorization, and lax access controls. Make sure security is baked into API design from the start, not bolted on later. ... Application logging and monitoring are essential for detecting threats, ensuring compliance, and responding promptly to security incidents and policy violations. Logging is more than a check-the-box activity—for developers, logging can be a critical line of defense.


Why security teams cannot rely solely on AI guardrails

The core issue is that most guardrails are implemented as standalone NLP classifiers—often lightweight models fine-tuned on curated datasets—while the LLMs they are meant to protect are trained on far broader, more diverse corpora. This leads to misalignment between what the guardrail flags and how the LLM interprets inputs. Our findings show that prompts obfuscated with Unicode, emojis, or adversarial perturbations can bypass the classifier, yet still be parsed and executed as intended by the LLM. This is particularly problematic when guardrails fail silently, allowing semantically intact adversarial inputs through. Even emerging LLM-based judges, while promising, are subject to similar limitations. Unless explicitly trained to detect adversarial manipulations and evaluated across a representative threat landscape, they can inherit the same blind spots. To address this, security teams should move beyond static classification and implement dynamic, feedback-based defenses. Guardrails should be tested in-system with the actual LLM and application interface in place. Runtime monitoring of both inputs and outputs is critical to detect behavioral deviations and emergent attack patterns. Additionally, incorporating adversarial training and continual red teaming into the development cycle helps expose and patch weaknesses before deployment.

CDO and CAIO roles might have a built-in expiration date

“The CDO role is likely to be durable, much due to the long-term strategic value of data; however, it is likely to evolve to encompass more strategic business responsibility,” he says. “The CAIO, on the other hand, is likely to be subsumed into CTO or CDO roles as AI technology folds into core technologies and architectures standardize.” For now, both CIAOs and CDOs have responsibilities beyond championing the use of AI and good data governance, Stone adds. You will reduce privileges to their minimum and activate them only as needed and you will make sure that devices connecting to your data are protected and monitored. Enclave is all about aligning your data’s sensitivity with your cybersecurity requirements. For example, to download a public document, no authentication is required, but to access your CRM, containing all your customers’ data, you will require a username, password, an extra factor of authentication, and to be in the office. You will not be able to download the data. Two different sensitivities, two experiences. ... The leadership team is the compass for the rest of the company – their north star. To make the right decision during a crisis, you much be prepared to face it. And how do you make sure that you’re not affected by all this adrenaline and stress that is caused by such an event? A majority of security respondents (58%) said they have difficulty getting development to prioritize remediation of vulnerabilities, and 52% reported that red tape often slows their efforts to quickly fix vulnerabilities. In addition, security respondents pointed to several specific frustrations related to their jobs, including difficulty understanding security findings, excessive false positives and testing happening late in the software development process. ... Although AI promises to help simplify software development processes, many organizations still have a long road ahead. In fact, respondents who are using AI were significantly more likely than those not using AI to want to consolidate their toolchain, suggesting that the proliferation of different point solutions running different AI models could be adding complexity, not taking it away.


Significant Gap Exists in UK Cyber Resilience Efforts

A persistent lack of skilled cybersecurity professionals in the civil service is one reason for the persistent gap in resilience, parliamentarians wrote. "Government has been unwilling to pay the salaries necessary to hire the experienced and skilled people it desperately needs to manage its cybersecurity effectively." Government figures show the workforce has grown and there are plans to recruit more experts - but a third of cybersecurity roles are either vacant "or filled by expensive contractors," the report states. "Experience suggests government will need to be realistic about how many of the best people it can recruit and retain." The report also faults government departments for not taking sufficient ownership over cybersecurity. The prime minister's office for years relied on departments to perform a cybersecurity self-assessment, until in 2023 when it launched GovAssure, a program to bring in independent assessors. GovAssure turned the self-assessments on their head, finding that the departments that ranked themselves the highest through self-assessment were among the less secure. Continued reliance on legacy systems have figured heavily in recent critiques of British government IT, and it does in the parliamentary report, as well. "It is unacceptable that the center of government does not know how many legacy IT systems exist in government and therefore cannot manage the associated cyber risks."

'Lemon Sandstorm' Underscores Risks to Middle East Infrastructure

The compromise started at least two years ago, when the attackers used stolen VPN credentials to gain access to the organization's network, according to a May 1 report published by cybersecurity firm Fortinet, which helped with the remediation process that began late last year. Within a week, the attacker had installed Web shells on two external-facing Microsoft Exchange servers and then updated those backdoors to improve their ability to remain undetected. In the following 20 months, the attackers added more functionality, installed additional components to aid persistence, and deployed five custom attack tools. The threat actors, which appear to be part of an Iran-linked group dubbed "Lemon Sandstorm," did not seem focused on compromising data, says John Simmons, regional lead for Fortinet's FortiGuard Incident Response team. "The threat actor did not carry out significant data exfiltration, which suggests they were primarily interested in maintaining long-term access to the OT environment," he says. "We believe the implication is that they may [have been] positioning themselves to carry out a future destructive attack against this CNI." Overall, the attack follows a shift by cyber-threat groups in the region, which are now increasingly targeting CNI.

Many enterprises are now confronting a stark reality. AI is expensive, not just in terms of infrastructure and operations, but in the way it consumes entire IT budgets. Training foundational models or running continuous inference pipelines takes resources of an order of magnitude greater than the average SaaS or data analytics workload. As competition in AI heats up, executives are asking tough questions: Is every app in the cloud still worth its cost? Where can we redeploy dollars to speed up our AI road map? ... Historically, data modeling was a business intelligence (BI) and analytics concern, focused on structuring data for dashboards and reports. However, AI applications shift this responsibility to the operational layer, where real-time decisions are made. While foundation models are incredibly smart, they can also be incredibly dumb. They have vast general knowledge but lack context and your information. They need structured and unstructured data to provide this context, or they risk hallucinating and producing unreliable outputs. ... Traditional data models were built for specific systems, relational for transactions, documents for flexibility and graphs for relationships. But AI requires all of them at once because an AI agent might talk to the transactional database first for enterprise application data, such as flight schedules from our previous example. Then, based on that response, query a document to build a prompt that uses a semantic web representation for flight-rescheduling logic. In this case, a single model format isn’t enough. This is why polyglot data modeling is key. It allows AI to work across structured and unstructured data in real time, ensuring that both knowledge retrieval and decision-making are informed by a complete view of business data.


Your password manager is under attack, and this new threat makes it worse

"Password managers are high-value targets and face constant attacks across multiple surfaces, including cloud infrastructure, client devices, and browser extensions," said NordPass PR manager Gintautas Degutis. "Attack vectors range from credential stuffing and phishing to malware-based exfiltration and supply chain risks." Googling the phrase "password manager hacked" yields a distressingly long list of incursions. Fortunately, in most of those cases, passwords and other sensitive information were sufficiently encrypted to limit the damage. ... One of the most recent and terrifying threats to make headlines came from SquareX, a company selling solutions that focus on the real-time detection and mitigation of browser-based web attacks. SquareX spends a great deal of its time obsessing over the degree to which browser extension architectures represent a potential vector of attack for hackers. ... For businesses and enterprises, the attack is predicated on one of two possible scenarios. In the first scenario, users are left to make their own decisions about what extensions are loaded onto their systems. In this case, they are putting the entire enterprise at risk. Software architecture is not just a technical plan but a way to turn an idea into reality. A good system can model users’ behaviors and usage, expand to meet demand, secure data and combine well with other systems. It takes the concepts of distributed systems, APIs, security layers and front-end interfaces into one cohesive and easy-to-use product. I have been involved with building APIs that are crucial for the integration of multiple products to provide a consistent user experience to consumers of these products. Along with the group of architects, we played a crucial role in breaking down these complex integrations into manageable components and designing easy-to-implement API interfaces. Also, using cloud services, these APIs were designed to be highly resilient. ... One of the most important lessons I have learned as a technologist is that just because we can build something does not mean we should. While working on a project related to financing a car, we were able to collect personally identifiable information (PII). Initially, we had it stored for a long duration. However, we were unaware of the implications. When we discussed the situation with the architecture and security teams, we found out that we don’t have ownership of the data and it was very risky to store that data for a long period. We mitigated the risk by reducing the data retention period to what will be useful to users.
