Should Your Organization Use a Hyperscaler Cloud Provider?

Vendor lock-in is perhaps the biggest hyperscaler pitfall. "Relying too heavily on a single hyperscaler can make it difficult to move workloads and data between clouds in the future," Inamdar warns. Proprietary services and tight integrations with a particular hyperscaler cloud provider's ecosystem can also lead to lock-in challenges. Cost management also requires close scrutiny. "Hyperscalers’ pay-as-you-go models can lead to unexpected or runaway costs if usage isn't carefully monitored and controlled," Inamdar cautions. "The massive scale of hyperscaler cloud providers also means that costs can quickly accumulate for large workloads." Security and compliance are additional concerns. "While hyperscalers invest heavily in security, the shared responsibility model means customers must still properly configure and secure their cloud environments," Inamdar says. "Compliance with regulatory requirements across regions can also be complex when using global hyperscaler cloud providers." On the positive side, hyperscaler availability and durability levels exceed almost every enterprise's requirements and capabilities, Wold says.

Architectural technical debt is a design or construction approach that's expedient in the short term, but that creates a technical context in which the same work requires architectural rework and costs more to do later than it would cost to do now (including increased cost over time). ... The shift-left approach embraces the concept of moving a given aspect closer to the beginning than at the end of a lifecycle. This concept gained popularity with shift-left for testing, where the test phase was moved to a part of the development process and not a separate event to be completed after development was finished. Shift-left can be implemented in two different ways in managing ATD:Shift-left for resiliency: Identifying sources that have an impact on resiliency, and then fixing them before they manifest in performance. Shift-left for security: Detect and mitigate security issues during the development lifecycle. Just like shift-left for testing, a prioritized focus on resilience and security during the development phase will reduce the potential for unexpected incidents.


Snowflake adopts open source strategy to grab data catalog mind share

The complexity and diversity of data systems, coupled with the universal desire of organizations to leverage AI, necessitates the use of an interoperable data catalog, which is likely to be open source in nature, according to Chaurasia. “An open-source data catalog addresses interoperability and other needs, such as scalability, especially if it is built on top of a popular table format as Iceberg. This approach facilitates data management across various platforms and cloud environments,” Chaurasia said. Separately, market research firm IDC’s research vice president Stewart Bond pointed out that Polaris Catalog may have leveraged Apache Iceberg’s native Iceberg Catalogs and added enterprise-grade capabilities to it, such as managing multiple distributed instances of Iceberg repositories, providing data lineage, search capability for data utilities, and data description capabilities among others. Polaris Catalog, which Snowflake expects to open source in the next 90 days, can be either be hosted in its proprietary AI Data Cloud or can be self-hosted in an enterprise’s own infrastructure using containers such as Docker or Kubernetes.


Is it Time for a Full-Stack Network Infrastructure?

When we talk about full-stack network infrastructure management, we aren’t referring to the seven-stack protocol layers upon which networks are built, but rather to how these various protocol layers and the applications and IT assets that run on top of them are managed. ... The key to choosing between a full-stack single network management solution or just a SASE solution that focuses on security and policy enforcement in a multi-cloud environment is whether you are most concerned that your network governance and security policies are uniform and enforced or if you're seeking a solution that is above and beyond just security and governance, and that can address the entire network management continuum—from security and governance to monitoring, configuration, deployment, and mediation. Further complicating the decision of how to best grow the network is the situation of network vendors themselves. Those that offer a full-stack, multi-cloud network management solution are in evolutionary stages themselves. They have a vision of their multi-cloud full-stack network offerings, but a complete set of stack functionality is not yet in place.

While critical loads are expected to be renewed, refreshed, or replaced over the lifetime of the data center facility, older, non-energy star certified, or inefficient servers that are still turned on but no longer being used continue to use both power and cooling resources. Stranded assets also include excessive redundancy or low utilization of the redundancy options, a lack of scalable, modular design, and the use of oversized equipment or legacy lighting and controls. While many may plan for the update and evolution of the ITE, the mismatch of power and cooling resources versus the equipment requiring the respective power and cooling inevitably results in stranded assets. ... Stranded capacity is wasted energy, cooling unnecessary equipment, and lost cooling to areas that need not be cooled. Stranded cooling capacity can include bypass air (supply air from cooling units that is not contributing to cooling the ITE), too much supply air being delivered from the cooling units, lack of containment, poor rack hygiene (missing blanking panels), unsealed openings under ITE with raised floors, just to name a few.

The critical skill in making trade-offs is being able to consider two or more potentially opposing alternatives at the same time. This requires being able to clearly convey alternatives so a team can decide which alternative, or neither, acceptably meets the QARs under consideration. What makes trade-off decisions particularly difficult is that the choice is not clear; the facts supporting the pro and con arguments are typically only partial and often inconclusive. If the choice was clear there would be no need to make a trade-off decision. ... Teams who are inexperienced in specific technologies will struggle to make decisions about how to best use those technologies. For example, a team may decide to use a poorer-fit technology such as a relational database to store a set of maps because they don’t understand the better-fit technology, such as a graph database, well enough to use it. Or they may be unwilling to take the hit in productivity for a few releases to get better at using a graph database.


New Machine Learning Algorithm Promises Advances in Computing

Compact enough to fit on an inexpensive computer chip capable of balancing on your fingertip and able to run without an internet connection, the team’s digital twin was built to optimize a controller’s efficiency and performance, which researchers found resulted in a reduction of power consumption. It achieves this quite easily, mainly because it was trained using a type of machine learning approach called reservoir computing. “The great thing about the machine learning architecture we used is that it’s very good at learning the behavior of systems that evolve in time,” Kent said. “It’s inspired by how connections spark in the human brain.” Although similarly sized computer chips have been used in devices like smart fridges, according to the study, this novel computing ability makes the new model especially well-equipped to handle dynamic systems such as self-driving vehicles as well as heart monitors, which must be able to quickly adapt to a patient’s heartbeat. “Big machine learning models have to consume lots of power to crunch data and come out with the right parameters, whereas our model and training is so extremely simple that you could have systems learning on the fly,” he said.


Getting infrastructure right for generative AI

“It was quite cost-effective at first to buy our own hardware, which was a four-GPU cluster,” says Doniyor Ulmasov, head of engineering at Papercup. He estimates initial savings between 60% and 70% compared with cloud-based services. “But when we added another six machines, the power and cooling requirements were such that the building could not accommodate them. We had to pay for machines we could not use because we couldn’t cool them,” he recounts. And electricity and air conditioning weren’t the only obstacles. ... Another factor working against unmitigated power consumption is sustainability. Many organizations have adopted sustainability goals, which power-hungry AI algorithms make it difficult to achieve. Rutten says using SLMs, ARM-based CPUs, and cloud providers that maintain zero-emissions policies, or that run on electricity produced by renewable sources, are all worth exploring where sustainability is a priority. For implementations that require large-scale workloads, using microprocessors built with field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) or application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) are a choice worth considering.


Security Teams Want to Replace MDR With AI: A Good or Bad Idea?

“The first stand-out takeaway is the dissatisfaction with MDR systems across the board. A mix between high false positive rates and system inefficiencies is driving a shift for AI solutions, the driving factor being accuracy.” McStay said that the report’s findings that claim that AI has the potential to automate and decrease workloads by as much as 95% are “potentially inflated”. “I don’t think it will be that high in practice, but I would still expect a massive reduction in workload (circa 50-80%). Perhaps opening up a new conversation around where time should be spent best?” McStay added that she does believe replacing MDR with AI is “smart, and certainly what the future will look like”, based on accuracy and response time. ... “The catch is that nobody is ‘replacing’ anything, rather AI is being integrated solely for the purpose of expediting detection and response, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio for human operators drastically and makes for a far more effective SOC,” Hasse explained. When questioned whether it was a good idea to replace MDR with AI Hasse said security teams should not be replacing MDR services but rather augmenting them.

IT’s Waste Management Job With Software Applications

Shelfware is precisely that: applications and systems that sit on the physical or virtual shelf because nobody uses them. They could even be installed, where they take up storage space. Shelfware doesn’t start out that way. Someone at some point purchased that software because they thought it would address a company's need. Then, through either disappointment with the product or product obsolescence, they find out that the product doesn’t meet their need. There will always be well-intentioned software failures like this in companies, but if IT doesn’t sweep out the debris by getting rid of the software and cancelling contracts, shelfware will continue to show up as an expense in the IT budget. ... There are few more painful software installation issues than system integration, especially when vendors tell you that they have interfaces to your systems, and you discover major flaws in the interfaces that you must manually correct. Complicated integrations set back projects and are difficult to explain to management. If an integration becomes too difficult, the software likely gets dumped, but someone forgets to dump it from the budget.


Securing open source software: Whose job is it, anyway?

"We at CISA are particularly focused on OSS security because, as everyone here knows, the vast majority of our critical infrastructure relies on open source software," Easterly declared in her keynote. "And while the Log4Shell vulnerability might have been a big wakeup call for many in government, it demonstrated what this community has known and warned about for years: due to its widespread deployment, the exploitation of OSS vulnerabilities becomes more impactful," she added. In addition to holding software developers liable for selling vulnerable products, Easterly has also repeatedly called on vendors to support open source software security – either via money or dedicated developers to help maintain and secure the open source code that ends up in their commercial projects. ... Easterly repeated this call to action at this week's Summit, citing a Harvard study [PDF] that estimates open source software has generated more than $8 trillion dollars in value globally. "I do have one ask of all the software manufacturers," Easterly noted – though it ended up being technically two asks. "We need companies to be both responsible consumers of and sustainable contributors to the open software they use," she continued.


Anatomy of a BlackCat Attack Through the Eyes of Incident Response

“When responding to an incident, one of the areas that should be looked at is ‘What will the attacker understand and how will they react?’ – this is one of the areas that makes IR work for professionals,” Elboim explained. “On one hand, response activities should do the maximum to contain and remediate, but on the other, they should be done carefully so that the attacker will not know that activity is taking place – or at least not fully understand the type and scope of activities that are being done.” It was too late in this instance. “Cutting the Internet connection is a severe action that was unavoidable in this specific case, but there are many cases where we have taken a more careful approach and planned our activities so that the attacker isn’t informed of our activities, until we and the company we assist, are fully ready,” he added. The important point here, however, is that the victim’s senior management was brave enough to take that severe action. By now, the attackers had succeeded in exfiltrating data, but had not yet commenced encryption. That encryption was blocked. It did not prevent BlackCat from attempting to extort the victim over the stolen data, and for the next three weeks the attacker attempted to do so. 


The Hidden Cost of Using Managed Databases

As an engineer, nothing frustrates me more than being unable to solve an engineering problem. To an extent, databases can be seen as a black box. Most database users use them as a place to store and retrieve data. They don’t necessarily bother about what’s going on all the time. Still, when something malfunctions, the users are at the mercy of whatever tool the provider supplied to troubleshoot them. Providers generally run databases on top of some virtualization (Virtual Machines, Containers) and are sometimes even operated by an orchestrator (e.g., K8s). Also, they don’t necessarily provide complete access to the server where the database is running. The multiple layers of abstraction don’t make the situation any easier. While providers don’t offer full access to prevent users from "shooting themselves in the foot," an advanced user will likely need elevated permissions to understand what’s happening on different stacks and fix the underlying problem. This is the primary factor influencing my choice to self-host software, aiming for maximum control. This could involve hosting on my local data center or utilizing foundational elements like Virtual Machines and Object Storage, allowing me to create and manage my services.

Researchers Develop Self-Replicating Malware “Morris II” Exploiting GenAI

GenAI attacks of this type have not yet been seen in the wild, and the researchers demonstrated this approach under lab conditions. But security researchers have been warning that state-sponsored hackers have been observed experimenting with the offensive capability of ChatGPT and similar tools since they became available. The self-replicating malware functions by identifying prompts that will generate output that serves as a further prompt, in a process that is not very different from how common buffer overflow attacks operate. The approach also exploits a feature of GenAI called “retrieval-augmented generation” (RAG), a method by which LLMs can be prompted to retrieve data that exists outside of their training model. Ultimately the researchers blamed poor design for opening the door to this approach, urging GenAI companies to go back to the drawing board and improve their architecture. GenAI email assistants of the sort that were attacked here are already a popular type of automation and productivity tool, performing features that range from automatically forwarding incoming emails to relevant parties to generating replies. 


Microsoft says Russian hackers stole source code after spying on its executives

It’s not clear what source code was accessed, but Microsoft warns that the Nobelium group, or “Midnight Blizzard,” as Microsoft refers to them, is now attempting to use “secrets of different types it has found” to try to further breach the software giant and potentially its customers. “Some of these secrets were shared between customers and Microsoft in email, and as we discover them in our exfiltrated email, we have been and are reaching out to these customers to assist them in taking mitigating measures,” says Microsoft. Nobelium initially accessed Microsoft’s systems through a password spray attack last year. This type of attack is a brute-force approach where hackers utilize a large dictionary of potential passwords against accounts. Microsoft had configured a non-production test tenant account without two-factor authentication enabled, allowing Nobelium to gain access. “Across Microsoft, we have increased our security investments, cross-enterprise coordination and mobilization, and have enhanced our ability to defend ourselves and secure and harden our environment against this advanced persistent threat,” says Microsoft.

Merim Becirovic, managing director of global IT and enterprise architecture at Accenture, says his clients often wonder whether they’re falling behind. “With the level of technology maturity today, it’s a lot easier to make good decisions and not regret them. How to Not Screw Up Your Product Strategy

Creating the strategy also requires influencing and collaborating with many people. Mind-reading technology is everyone's next big security nightmare


Non-invasive systems read neural signals through the scalp, typically using EEG, the same technologies used by neurologists to interpret the brain's electrical impulses in order to diagnose epilepsy. Non-invasive systems can also transmit information back into the brain with techniques like transcranial magnetic stimulation, again already in use by medics. Invasive systems, meanwhile, involve direct contact between the brain and electrodes, and are being used experimentally to help people that have experienced paralysis to operate prostheses, like robotic limbs, or to aid people with hearing or sight problems to recover some element of the sense they've lost. Clearly, there are more immediate hazards to invasive systems: surgery always brings risks, particularly where the delicate tissue of the brain is concerned. So given the risks involved, why choose an invasive system over a non-invasive system – why put electronics into your grey matter itself? As ever, there's a trade-off to be had. Invasive systems cut out the clutter and make it easier to decode what's going on in the brain.

So how can consumers claim to switch businesses based on information that they can't possibly access? The bottom line is that they can't. But — and here's where Molly Hetz, an Iovation product marketing manager and the main author of the report, makes a useful observation — those consumers can make such a decision based on their perception of security. And that's where things get tricky. Consider: One of the best security and authentication approaches today is continuous authentication, where the system considers typing speed, typing pressure (for mobile devices), IP address, time of access, what files are being accessed, duration of session, typing accuracy (number of typos per minute), etc. — and compares all of it against a profile of a session that presumably was of the actual user associated with those credentials. The best part about continuous authentication is that it's indeed continuous, meaning that it won't theoretically be fooled by an attacker who does everything properly and within character for 10 minutes and then does the evil things that the attacker always planned to do.

Listening can be particularly challenging for anyone in a management or leadership position, given all the pressures they face. Dozens of unread emails pile up by the hour, and calendars are a wall of back-to-back meetings. It can be hard to be present in the moment. But listening is not just a nice-to-have skill for senior executives; it is essential for effective leadership for two distinct reasons. Building credibility, like many things in life, is easier said than done. I learned a hard lesson on credibility early in my career—one that, ironically, centered on failure. At the time, we were working on a complex, massive, and difficult IT project, one which turned out to be a lot more difficult than initially anticipated, and we were struggling to meet the demanding deadlines. We were working weekends for months on end, and I drove into the office one Saturday morning with boxes of donuts for the team. But I could see on their faces and in their body language a level of stress that no amount of sugar would fix. I stood in front of the group and told them we were delaying the project. Immediately, I could sense their relief. Their bodies relaxed, their jaws unclenched, and I felt the stress leaving the room. We regrouped, set new priorities and eventually delivered the project with the key functionality necessary for the business users. After we went live with the new system, our company CEO said, “I was worried how the delay may negatively impact your reputation within the company, however, the quality of delivery proved otherwise.”

Swedish hospitals suffer IT crashes


“The computers that have experienced serious crashes are spread all over the West Götaland region, in every division,” said Thomas Schulz Rohm, press secretary for the West Götaland authority. Maria Skoglöf, manager of the authority’s IT support centre, said the matter was being taken very seriously because many computers were affected. “The problem is not solved,” she said. “But the number of hard disk crashes has gone down since last week.” Skoglöf said she could not say where the problems had hit the hardest. “It is up to every division to say how they were hit and how they solved it,” she added. Staff have resorted to manual processes to alleviate the problems, said Skoglöf. “It is important to have manual routines to use when there are no computers available.” Skoglöf said that as far as she knew, the computer crashes had not affected any patients’ health.

Another one is the uniqueness of Uber Eats as a three-sided (delivery partners, restaurants, and eaters) marketplace, which makes it necessary to take all partners into account for every decision we make. It provides generic solutions for data collecting, feature engineering, modeling, serving both offline and online predictions, etc., which saves a lot of time compared to reinventing the wheels. ... The greedy matching algorithm only starts looking for a delivery partner when there’s an order coming in. The result is optimal for a single order but not for all the orders in our system from a global perspective. Therefore, we changed to the global matching algorithm so that we can solve the entire set of orders and delivery partners as a single global optimization problem.


Singapore moots regulated trading in cryptocurrencies


The regulator said: "While advancements in digital cryptography and distributed ledger technology have the potential to improve access to services, generate cost efficiencies, and spur competition between new and conventional business models, the specific use cases for digital tokens have, thus far, remained embryonic. Meanwhile, their transformative possibilities may produce new sources of risks, requiring participants and regulators to think of new ways to mitigate these risks, and retain the trust and stability in the financial sector." It noted that the trading of popular digital tokens such as Bitcoin and Ether had largely been on unregulated markets, which had been fraught with allegations of fictitious trades and market manipulation. This had spurred interest amongst international institutional investors for an alternative, regulated environment in which some of these risks could be mitigated, MAS said, adding that Bitcoin futures, for instance, currently were listed an traded on the US futures exchanges.  The Singapore regulator last year had warned eight cryptocurrency exchanges against engaging in unauthorised trading, specifically, those involving securities or futures contracts.

While the number of jobs related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin has skyrocketed in the past four years, the number of searches for those jobs has drastically dropped recently, according to job search site Indeed. Over the past year, the share of cryptocurrency- and blockchain-related job postings per million has slowed on Indeed, increasing 26%. At the same time, the share of searches per million for jobs in the field has decreased by 53%. ... Bitcoin's value has been on a roller coaster ride in the past two years. In 2018, the cryptocurrency's price plummeted from nearly $19,500 in Februrary to around $3,600 by the end of last year. Over the past year, however, bitcoin's value jumped to more than $12,000 before settling back to about $9,200 today. The volatility seems to be turning potential job seekers off. "For the first time, the number of jobs per million exceeded the number of searches per million," Cavin wrote. It could be reasonable to assume that if bitcoin drops dramatically again, a candidate looking for a blockchain role would run into less competition than they would after a large increase."
